Webb says gun that aide had was his
Richmond TIMES-DISPATCH ^ | June 17, 2007 | Peter Hardin

Sen. Jim Webb has dispelled any lingering mystery about it: The pistol involved in the arrest of a top Webb aide was the senator's.

"It's my gun," Webb, D-Va., acknowledged in an interview last week. Webb declined again to talk about whether he complies with the District of Columbia handgun ban.

Almost six months into his first term, the writer, lawyer and Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam War combat agreed to an interview that touched an array of topics. They ranged from the gun episode, Iraq and presidential politics.

Webb disclosed he was invited to the White House on Wednesday as part of a small, bipartisan group of lawmakers who met with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. The group included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Webb said he discussed concerns and ideas about the situation in Iraq and in the broader Middle East, and he "felt like I was listened to."

(After that meeting, Webb introduced his son, Jimmy, who recently returned from the Marine Corps in Iraq, to Bush in the Oval Office, according to Webb's spokeswoman. The visit was private and "very respectful," said the Webb aide, Jessica Smith.

(In November, Webb had a chilly exchange with Bush at the White House after the president inquired about Jimmy. It was based on that situation that Webb now wanted the president to meet his son, Smith said. Webb has been a vocal foe of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

(Webb did not volunteer to The Times-Dispatch last week that his son had met Bush. That was reported Friday by NBC Nightly News.)

The senator said he would not vote for a revived immigration overhaul bill if it provides a path to legal status for nearly 12 million illegal immigrants

Change the law and let him carry it wherever the hell he wants to.

Was it his gun before it wasn't his gun...or is it the other way around?

Did Webb betray his fellow Jar Heads in Nam? Here he broke the law, obstructed justice, and possibly perjured himself. RESIGN dam it

Change the law and let him carry it wherever the hell he wants to.

The issue was never whether or not Webb should be allowed to carry the gun. We all agree that the DC gun laws are ridiculous.

The issue was that he acted irresponsibly by not knowing where he left the weapon. Then he denied it was his and let his "friend" and aide spend his birthday locked up.

For being a former Marine he sure is a coward.

Whats so hard about coming out and saying that 99% of the gun laws in this country are unconsitutional and should be repealed.

Like most of the elected. He is more worried about loseing their job then protecting the people that put them there.

I must admit, I pulled the lever for George Allen, but after his downfall, which is the worst self-inflicted collapse I’ve ever seen in a life of watching politics, I didn’t care that this guy was our new Senator that much.

This guy is the Democrats’ most dangerous weapon. He is the smartest and most defense oriented man they’ve got. He speaks clearly and with expertise about any number of issues. After we whip their ass with Fred, if they were smart they’d nominated him. If they were smart, mind you. Expect him to be sidelined shortly by the Kosmonauts and DUmmies for being a DLC “traitor”.

I live in Virginia and I'll NEVER vote for the guy.

I'll accept his version of the episode (whatever) and cut him slack based on his service to the country.

The senator said he would not vote for a revived immigration overhaul bill if it provides a path to legal status for nearly 12 million illegal immigrants

He obviously wants to be re-elected.

Are you kidding? He's earning some serious props points with his progressive peeps. Learning to lie, deny and flip-flop is worth some new committee appointment in the dem's eyes.

Since webb let his underling take the fall, do you think he turned his staffer upside down and put the staffer’s “privates” in his mouth... you know.. as a cultural show of appreciation and love?

That's between him and his staff.

You being a libertarian... I understand that almost anything goes. It’s your right... but I don’t agree with it. You did read webb’s book I take it?

I only read the excerpts distributed by the Allen campaign.

I'm not endorsing aberrant behaviour, I just don't give a crap what other people do.

He speaks clearly and with expertise, and without sounding smooth or scripted. It can't last.

Saying he's my favorite Virginia Senator is kind of like saying Robert Downey Jr is my favorite ex-cokehead actor, but I like the way he plays close to the vest. For instance, I really like that he clearly went out of his way to introduce his son to President Bush AND that he didn't tell the press.

I guess I'm just hoping he finds a way to escape the evil he's living with in DC.

“The senator said he would not vote for a revived immigration overhaul bill if it provides a path to legal status for nearly 12 million illegal immigrants”

I didn’t vote for him, but I’ve emailed him several times on this, as apparently have many of my fellow virginians.

Right now, if this is in fact his position, I’m ok with him being my Senator, as crazy as he is because right now, I feel I need a crazy senator to vote against our crazy president on this issue.

I am a single issue voter right now - I have no party affiliation, just this one issue is all that matters right now.....Amnesty must not pass.
