If you haven't identified it how do you know it went extinct? It's extinct because it perished before it could be found and indentified. Obviously, because you do not have the keen intellect of a liberal environmental scientist, you cannot possibly understand this.

These “scientists” are using the same logic they probably ridiculed when Rumsfeld used it: you have known, knowns, your known, unknown, and your unknown, unknown.
The “50,000 per year” figure comes from their unknown, unknown guesstimate.
