But where was love?

In the same token, where were the multiple, daily drive by shootings? Millions of illegal aliens, and organized gangs? Today we have Manson style brutal murders weekly, not to mention senseless mass murders of students, work place shootings etc, sky scrapers being leveled etc.

Don't know about you, but I'd take what we had in the 60s any day.

The sixties sucked but kids could still play outside without guard towers.

Of course, it could be argued that today's social pathologies you mentioned are a direct result of the permissive attitudes of the 1960s.

Much of today’s social ills can be traced directly to the 60’s. Most of the 60’s Flower Children were raised in traditional middle class homes and still had some sense of middle class values despite their rebellion. 40 years and a dependent Great Society later we have social chaos in too many quarters.

ALSO, it’s not as if brutal crime/gangs, etc. didn’t exist in the 50s and 60’s, but in those days there wasn’t 24/7 news, either.

I’m with you,dragnet!
The hippie movement had a LOT of faults which is why I was never a true believer.I saw through the hypocrisy, poseurs and scene makers.
Yet the music was a lot better, the crime rate was MUCH lower and there was hope in the air.It was a special time to be alive and I was glad I was there in the midst of it,warts and all.

“Don’t know about you, but I’d take what we had in the 60s any day.”

My cousin and I were just talking today about how, in the early 70’s, her mother would drop us off DOWNTOWN before work in the morning and pick us up after work in the evening.

We would have about $5-$10 each, and would browse stores and shop at Woolworths and have lunch somewhere together.

We were both about 10 YEARS OLD!

I can’t imagine letting my children ever do that these days. By contrast, I stand vigilant outside the public restroom door when my 8 year old son goes inside.

But as far as this article goes (and what the other poster is talking about) is that America started its downhill descent around this time. Maybe it was moving downhill before the “Summer of Love”, but it certainly sped up around then.
