China coveted and then won the opportunity to host the 2008 Summer Olympics. Now Hu Jintao and his communist government of China face a long series of hurdles they never quite anticipated: scandals and potential policy disasters that are being exposed by journalists eager to learn more about the Peoples Republic of China. And they are looking over The Great Wall of China harder and longer than ever before.
Surviving all the prying eyes of the international corps of journalists every one of which is interested in leaning more about China before and during these Olympics may prove as difficult for China as building all the venues and encouraging the Chinese population to behave in a way westerners can tolerate.
Already China has relented somewhat on the issue of Darfur; where the genocide and murder of ethnic Christian Africans by the ethnic Muslim Arabs in charge of Sudan is taking place. China has turned a blind eye to these atrocities for years but just last week convinced President General Omar Bashir of Sudan to accept peacekeepers. The situation remains grave and deserves careful observation. On the situation in Darfur, add to international pressure on Sudan and China Hollywood stars already referring to Beijing 2008 as the Genocide Games.
