Those of you who live outside the area probably don't hear much about this stuff, but in recent years there has been one sex-related scandal after another at the Naval Academy.

As an enlisted man, you get to where you can call anything ‘sir’.

he appeared to look at the camera while having sex with his girlfriend. The ensign said he was watching the television, which was on at the time.

Hope the girlfriend doesn't find out.

That Navy has had a tough year period. Between crazy astronaut, fired CO’s of ships, and various other nuts, it has not been the best year. However, we made it through Tailhook and will make it though 2007...

If we compare problems on a “per capita” basis - USNA is probably way low compared to other colleges and universities. Also, the Air Force Academy probably gets a higher rate of sex-related scandals than USNA.

Although I am in Washington State - I follow USNA activities quite closely, since I am a Blue Gold Officer for USNA, and have a son who is a Firstie there. There is definitely a “zero-tolerance” for sexual misconduct - and the campus is probably much safer than other campuses. (The worst misconduct usually occurs when too much drinking occurs, followed by an inability to say No! And the Academy has also toughened up the rules on alcohol consumption!!)

And this problem (sex tapes) has been listed about 3 weeks ago in other venues. Given some preliminary information, I would hold my fire on this one until there is clear proof of either improper conduct by the Commander - or proof of attempted blackmail and improper conduct by a former Mid. I think it could go either way at this time. (Which is why the Navy is keeping fairly quiet. No “Nifongs” here!!)

The Midshipmen should be glad that they’re not Coasties.

The US Coast Guard Academy is on the Banks of the Thames in New London, CT. On hot summer nights, Coast Guard cadets would take their dates to the riverbank to watch the Submarine races (and other nocturnal activities).

Meanwhile, across the river, at the Sub Base in Groton, CT, the submarines were watching back. Many of the boats had night vision periscopes, with closed circuit televisions, so the entire duty section could enjoy the show.
