Yeah, here in Gettysburg, NPS is undertaking a massive effort to restore the battlefield to its 1863 appearance, which includes clearing some 500 acres of second and third growth trees. Local envirowackos tired to put up some resistance but got no where fast since NPS had laid it outs plans and secured Congressional authorization ten years ago.

A lot of those trees are witness trees. They were planted at Gettysburg reunions by the survivors of the battle. Although I hate to cut them down for that reason, I'd rather see the fields as they saw them. Just like the observation tower.
