These are the saddest of times and the worst of times for George W. Bush. His war in Iraq continues to truck south, to join the immigration "reform" legislation that took up residence at the South Pole some time ago, and now his remaining friends are urging him to be the stand-up guy Texans are always telling us they are.

Not even the iron fence of secrecy and security surrounding the White House can resist the pressure building on the president to stand up to pardon Scooter Libby, soon to be sentenced to 24 months in prison for lying about a crime that was never committed. He won't be allowed to remain free while his appeal goes forward. This conviction stinks with growing pungency with every day Scooter remains in limbo. The principals are not worried about justice, but about trying to keep the stink off their robes, judicial and otherwise. There are villains aplenty.

The special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago, was brought in to find out who "outed" Valerie Plame, the dowager bombshell of the Potomac Palisades, revealing her to be an agent of the Central Intelligence Agency.

We elected him, and while we may not be happy with some of his decisions, he is still our best bet to deal with the Islamofascists. He never said it would be easy.

I do admire GWB for standing his ground against these democrat idiots. They think that we can just hide our heads in the sand and wish the bad guys away.

That isn’t going to happen in my opinion, and nothing else matters as much to me as keeping my grandchildren safe and free.

It’s my considered opinion that we have avoided another such attack simply because they never expected the response they got from us for 9/11. The honestly felt we would respond as usual, as we had in 1991 with the bombing of the Trade Center or the attack on the Cole. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that they were also quite surprised by the success of the 9/11 attack. In fact Osama himself later said on tape how much more successful the attack was than he had ever dreamed it would be.

I think Japan would have reconsidered attacking Pearl Harbor as well if they had it to do over again.

I am at a loss to explain President Bush. He is a completely different person from what he was in 1991.

I find it hard to accept that he has gone down exactly the same path that his father tread before being defeated by Bill Clinton.

I am still very thankful for the job he has done in protecting us from further attacks, but in a lot of respects he has been nothing less than a disaster for conservatives who have supported him for five years or more.

I'm wondering if conservatives will keep falling for this ruse over and over. Frankly, instead of having the right to say, "I told you so!", I would have rather had been wrong and had President Bush change into a conservative during his time in office.* But as I've said many times, it's not like he's changed his position on us--he telegraphed his immigration views for even the 2000 election.

The question remains, "how do we determine ahead of time whether we're just being pandered to during the primary/first term?" Can we believe Romney/Thompson moves to the right (or away from globalism, or whatever claim is made by a candidate seeking our support)?

You were certainly more prescient than I was at the time of the 2000 election. I thought Bush 43 was a conservative, and I guess compared to Gore he certainly was.

I fear I fall prey to the human trait of finding it all too easy to believe something I really want to believe, despite ample evidence to the contrary.

Your question about holding their feet to the fire has been asked by voters since the inception of our country! If you couldn’t take the “read my lips” to the bank then what on Earth can you believe?

For some reason I seem inclined to support Fred Thompson. Maybe it’s just his age and his appearance and demeanor, but I like him. I would like to see him teamed up with J.C. Watts.
