Saudi King Says Middle East Crisis Will Affect The World

DUBAI, June 19 (Bernama) -- The Saudi king has warned of an impending "explosion" in the Middle East, saying that it will not only affect the region but will spread all over the world, the English daily Gulf News reports.

"The Middle East region suffers from the longest conflict in our contemporary history which is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and Israel's occupation of Arab lands," King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, said in an interview with the Spanish El Pas newspaper which was published simultaneously in Al Riyadh newspaper yesterday.

"At this point in time we are exerting efforts to solve this conflict, but we are witnessing an expansion of the crisis to include other countries like Iraq and Lebanon," he said.

"This makes the region replete with troubles that pose grave concerns for us. My fears are the fears of all reasonable men that the explosive situation will not be confined to the region but will extend to the whole world," he added.

The Saudi monarch yesterday began a five-nation trip that will take him to Spain, France, Poland, Egypt and Jordan.

King Abdullah also underlined the importance of solving the problem of Iran's nuclear programme peacefully in a way that guarantees all countries in the region to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in accordance with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

American Airlines cited for alleged safety violations at O’Hare

(AP) The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed $231,000 in fines
against
American Airlines for alleged safety violations at O’Hare International

Airport.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations
against
the airline for concerns involving machine guarding, electrical issues,
trip
and fall hazards, blocked exits and storage of oxygen and acetylene
cylinders at the Chicago airport, according to a statement from OSHA.

The agency inspected the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline’s operations
at
O’Hare after reviewing its occupational injury and illness data.

“This is a very significant penalty being proposed,” said Brad
Mitchell, a
spokesman for the Labor Department. “The average safety penalty is
usually
well below $50,000.”

American spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said the airline’s workplace
safety
record overall — and particularly at O’Hare — has improved
significantly
in the past two years.

American already has fixed most of the issues noted in the inspection
and is
working to address the rest, Fagan said.

According to OSHA, the agency has inspected American 66 times at
various
locations nationally since 2004, with 37 of those inspections resulting
in
citations. The airline has been inspected at O’Hare 10 times since
2000,
with five of the inspections resulting in citations, according to the
agency.

Mid-air collison avoided

AIR safety investigators are examining an alleged near-miss at Roxby
Downs
between two aircraft carrying 70 passengers.

An Alliance Airlines flight from Adelaide with 48 people aboard was
preparing to land around 8am on Thursday when a private charter flight
carrying 28 people took off from the Olympic Dam Airport.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating reports the two

aircraft passed within 10m of each other as their pilots took evasive
action.

A spokesman said more information was being sought.

Firefighting helicopter crashes

Public safety: Chopper chashes near McCall, 2 injured

BOISE (AP) — A helicopter dropping water on fires in northcentral
Idaho
crash-landed in a marshy area, injuring its two pilots.

The helicopter, a privately owned Bell 214 hired by the U.S. Forest
Service
to make bucket drops on the 60-square-mile East Zone Complex of three
fires
northeast of McCall, damaged its cabin when it went down Wednesday
evening.
It ended up on its side in a marshy area between a small lake and
timber
where the fire is burning. The aircraft did not burn.

A firefighting airplane that was flying in the area at the time alerted

authorities, who deployed another helicopter from McCall to retrieve
the two
injured pilots. They were able to move away from the downed chopper and

reach a spot where the second helicopter could pick them up, Forest
Service
officials said. One of the pilots was treated at McCall Memorial
Hospital
and released while the other was being held there “for a few days for
observation,” said George Broyles, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman. He
declined to give details of their injuries, or provide information
about the
helicopter’s owner. The pilots were not

newsroom@idahopress.com Here’s a rundown on major wildfires throughout
Idaho.

Trapper Ridge Fire (11,159 acres 28 miles northeast of Idaho City) —
Crews
made progress on the north flank of the fire using air resources and
hand
crews. The fire received light rain Wednesday and exhibited minimal
growth.

Cascade Complex (11,981 acres; 2 percent contained, 10 miles south of
Yellow
Pine) — There are four active fires in the complex. The Monumental
Fire
(2,852 acres) grew to the southeast Wednesday, moving toward Bull Creek
and
the area of the Middle Fork Complex. Burnout operations continue in an
attempt to keep the fire east of National Forest Service Road 474. The
Riordan Lake Fire (9,036 acres), south of Yellow Pine, was active but
had
minimal growth. Structure protection work continues along Johnson Creek

Road. The Sandy Fire (52 acres) moved primarily to the east Wednesday.
Structure protection began on Snowshoe Cabin. National Forest Service
Road
447E will be closed starting Thursday to provide for public safety.
Middle
Fork Complex (5,900 acres; 20 percent contained, 15 miles northeast of
Garden Valley) —The complex now consists of 10 active fires, ranging
from
30 to 4,100 acres. Hotshots made progress on the Skunk Fire, while the
Sheep
Trail Fire showed minimal movement Wednesday. Crews were scheduled to
work
Thursday to improve and hold existing fire line on both the Sheep Trail
and
Mormon Fires. The Lucky Fire is progressing into inaccessible terrain.

Restrictions implemented

With firefighters stretched thin throughout the West, public lands
officials
in Southwestern Idaho have now fully-implemented Stage 2 Fire
Restrictions
in order to assist fire fighting efforts. The restrictions went into
effect
Thursday for the Boise, Payette and Sawtooth National Forests,
Southwest
Bureau of Land Management and Idaho Department of Lands areas for
Southwest
Idaho. Several human-caused fires have occurred during the past week,
forcing already limited available fire-fighting resources away from
dozens
of fires burning on public lands. With the new restrictions, officials
hope
to limit the number of human-caused fires.

It’s jail for now for mom who lost it on Denver flight

Tamera Jo Freeman’s kids were released to family in California

A mother accused of beating her two children and threatening an
attendant on
a flight to Denver will be in jail for awhile.
Tamera Jo Freeman, 38, of the San Francisco area, declined to challenge
her
indefinite incarceration during a detention hearing Thursday in U.S.
District Court in Denver.

Freeman is accused of drinking heavily while repeatedly striking her
2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter and throwing a drink at a flight

attendant.

She was mostly silent in court Thursday, the day after she was indicted
on
two counts of assault and one count of interfering with a flight
attendant.

Freeman’s court-appointed attorney, Martha Eskesen, pleaded not guilty
on
her behalf.

Federal prosecutor Brenda Taylor urged that Freeman remain in jail,
citing
the defendant’s prior trouble with the law in Hawaii.

Freeman was convicted in 2005 of misdemeanor abuse of a family member
while
living on Maui and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, according to the
Hawaii
court database. She also was convicted of a contempt-of- court charge
that
year and a probation violation in 2006.

In March, she was convicted of violating a protection order and
sentenced to
16 days in jail and 16 days credit for time served.

At the Denver hearing, Freeman declined to challenge her continued
incarceration, but her attorney said she may seek release in the
future.

Federal Magistrate Judge Craig B. Shaffer ruled that Freeman should
remain
in jail, saying he didn’t think she had sufficient ties to Colorado to
ensure she would return for trial.

Can you really imagine a man going on the internet, to find little girls to drown for sex purposes?

Have you noticed the number of little girls that drowned lately?

There have been several in motel pools, that seemed odd.

I guess choking them and the almost hanging them got boring, with so many doing it and TALKING ABOUT IT.

Still need to check my one loaf of bread, it is Sara Lee.

It is raining here.

GUELPH, Ont. (CP) - A Hamilton man was found today bound and gagged inside a car in a commuter parking lot near Highway 401 south of Guelph, Ont.

The 53-year-old man told police he was driving a tractor-trailer in Toronto when his rig was hijacked.

He says he was then driven to the parking lot and left in the car.

Police say they have no information on the location of the stolen truck and the load it was carrying.

The unidentified man was found in the car at about 6 a.m. by another commuter, who alerted police.

The Sunday Persecution

Alexei II, dictator of the Russian Orthodox Church, embraces
Vladimir Putin, dictator of the Russian People. Their relationship
is a close one, with echoes of the Holy Roman Empire or Nazi Germany
as depicted in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”

The blog Bartholomew’s Notes on Religion reports on the rise of religious manipulation and persecution in Russia

From (as ever) Interfax:

Most heavy metal songs are about murder and suicide, the Serbsky State Research Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry professor Fyodor Kondratyev opines.

‘Having researched 700 most popular heavy metal songs revealed that half of them is about murder, 7 percent is positive about suicide, and 35 percent preaches a variety of Satanist ideologies,’ Kondratyev said in his interview published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily on Monday. He shared with the journalists that according to the American National Education Association every year near 6,000 young Americans kill themselves under the influence of music like that.

Kondratyev tells of “1,000” Satanists in Moscow and “100 Satanist groups” in Russia. He also claims to have been told by a patient of “20 ritual murders”, but that “Good defenders and threatening of witnesses” have prevented successful prosecutions. Kondratyev’s warning comes just days after Deacon Andrey Kurayev of Moscow Theological Academy warned that Friday the 13th would see “more intense” Satanic activity. Kondratyev has previously railed against foreign “sects” in Russia. In 2004 the Russian Courier reported that:

Overseas-based religious cults are making huge expenditures to get established in Russia, says Fedor Kondratyev, analytical board chief of the Serbsky State Centre of Social and Forensic Medicine. “There is documentary proof of exorbitant sums spent to help such cults as they are penetrating Russia, and promote whatever home-grown cults who aim to undermine Eastern Christianity as spiritual pillar of the Russian nation,” Dr. Kondratyev said to a news conference. It gathered in Moscow today to discuss rehabilitating exotic cult victims.

This orthodox-nationalist perspective is also noted in an essay on “The Place of Xenophobia in Government Policies”, from the Moscow Helsinki Group:

Public figures, actively involved in the campaign against “totalitarian sects,” serve as intermediaries of a sort between the Russian Orthodox Church and government officials. They are organized around the Center of Jeriney of Lion, headed by Alexander Dvorykin…Dvorykin’s associates in the anti-cult struggle also include public officials, like the head of expert department of the V.P Serbsky State Research Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry, Fedor Kondratyev. The professional arguments (we shall not attempt here to make any judgments of their quality) of the latter are constantly combined with ideological passages of the following kind: “Each of the parishioners [Jehovah Witnesses] has a supervisor. The word of the supervisor is the word of God. As a result, fifty-thousand Russian passport holders are Russian citizens by law, but in fact are getting their orders from Americans, with the strings pulled from New-York, from Brooklyn.”

(We’ve blogged Dvorkin previously)

Also significant is Kondratyev’s place of employment, the Serbsky Institute. A 2004 report by Paul Goble explains:

Moscow’s Serbsky Institute, notorious in Soviet times for its criminal use of psychiatry and drugs against dissidents, is now playing an important role in the Russian government’s efforts to combat the spread of religious sects. Earlier this month, the institute helped to organize a conference in Tula entitled “The Influence of Destructive Sects on the Health of Society,” “Tul’skiye izvestiya” reported on November 2. ... The main address to the meeting, which was hosted by the local health department and the St. John Society of Orthodox Doctors, was given by the Serbsky Institute’s Professor Fedor Kondratyev... Kondratyev said that the influx of sectarian activists into Russia from abroad increased dramatically in the 1990s, but he argued that the purposes of this influx had not changed:

“This is one of the most effective measurs of the struggle of the West against the powerful Russian state. Hitler already wrote that there ought to be a sect in every Siberian village in order that Slavs not have any spiritual unity.”

Some of the sects in Russia today are “camouflaged” as Christian while others are openly “satanist,” he added. But both, he suggested “are directed against the state, society, the family, and the personality.”

In 2002, the Serbsky Institute was involved in the psychiatric evaluation of Col. Yuri Budanov, who had drunkenly raped and killed an 18-year-old Chechen woman in 2000. The evaluators overturned previous reports to declare that Budanov had been temporarily insane, and therefore non-culpable. The Chechen Times has further details:

Stuck on the matter of Budanov’s guilt, the state has turned to a familiar partner from Soviet times, a psychiatric profession that for decades followed orders to camouflage political problems behind the opaque curtain of mental illness. In doing so, however, officials have resurrected questions about psychiatry’s shameful past in the Soviet Union — and its highly politicized present. That controversial finding has opened a broad evaluation of the Serbsky Institute’s fitness as an independent judge of mental competence…. When the military court first ordered Serbsky to test Budanov, the panel conducting the inquiry was led by Tamara Pechernikova, the doctor who condemned poet Natalya Gorbanevskaya for protesting the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. When that evaluation of Budanov was criticized, the court next appointed a commission that included Georgi Morozov, the former Serbsky director who had sat on many of the committees that declared prominent dissidents insane in the 1970s and 1980s. “Practically nothing has changed. They have no shame at the institute about their role with the Communists,” said Yuri Savenko, head of the Independent Psychiatric Association of Russia. “They are the same people, and they do not want to apologize for all their actions in the past.”

Another report notes that:

Earlier in 2001, the head of the Serbsky Institute—Tatyana Dmitrieva—revealed that the Institute was subjecting “members of 20 non- traditional religious organizations” to psychiatric examinations, searching for signs of “psychological influencing” and “hypnosis.”

Just like the old days:

Raisa Ivanovna was arrested in 1973 (according to another source, 1972) among a group of eleven True Orthodox women from Vladimir. She was a teacher, the mother of two children. She was sent to the camp for political prisoners in Mordovia (385/3) for seven years. In 1974 she was subjected to a psychiatric examination in the Serbsky Institute in Moscow. Then she was returned to the camp, where the administration tried by all means possible to find witnesses who would certify that she was mentally ill. ... The “crimes” of the True Orthodox consisted in having put leaflets in the sergianist churches calling on the clergy to renounce their collaboration with Soviet power. These leaflets contained verses such as: “Satan lies under the mausoleum, his flesh has been rotting for a long time”. Some of them had photos and caricatures.

CK: “Beslan Mothers” ask FSB to declassify video and audio archives on Beslan

Caucasian Knot

“Beslan Mothers” ask FSB to declassify video and audio archives on
Beslan

The members of the “Beslan Mothers” committee of victims have lodged a
petition to Nikolai Patrushev, FSB Director, asking to declassify the
archives of the events on September 1-3 in Beslan and present the
materials to the investigatory group.

Susanna Dudieva, chair of the “Beslan Mothers” committee, has informed
the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent that the petition marks that Ivan
Sydoruk, Deputy Prosecutor General, stated, when meeting the victims,
that there should be no secrets in the investigation of the act of
terrorism in Beslan, and gave a respective order to interrogate the FSB

employees who took part in the counterterrorist operation on September
1-3, 2004, in Beslan.

Meanwhile, the victims assert that the employees of the investigatory
group of the State Office of Public Prosecutor, who are investigating
the so-called “main case” on the Beslan terror act, declare that it is
the FSB’s position that hampers quick investigation.

Beslan video ‘disproves official story’

REUTERS
29th July 2007

Previously unseen film proves that the bloody end to the 2004 Beslan
siege was caused by security forces firing on a school crammed with
hostages, not by blasts from within, a victim support group says.

The Beslan Mothers’ Committee says the footage disproves the official
version that the detonation of a boobytrap device planted by Chechen
separatists inside the building caused the carnage at School No.1, in
the southern Russian town of Beslan.

Some 333 victims, half of them children, were killed in the siege,
which
ended in chaos when security forces stormed the school gymnasium to
free
more than 1,000 children and parents held captive for three days.

Committee head Susanna Dudiyeva said the video supports her conviction
that security forces fired two grenade launcher rounds on the sports
hall, igniting a fire that quickly engulfed the building.

“Why did they fire where there were children, on the sports hall?”
Dudiyeva said to reporters after the film was shown at a local cultural

centre this week.

Investigators have yet to deliver a final report on modern Russia’s
most
harrowing hostage tragedy. Relatives of the dead say the videotape,
received anonymously by post, supports their conviction that there has
been a cover-up.

“The prosecutor’s office rejects or ignores all our inquiries and
insists that only the terrorists are to blame for what happened,” said
Dudiyeva.

“We do not agree with that. We keep finding new evidence and we intend
to prove to the prosecutor’s office what really happened.” Nobody
answered a telephone call seeking comment from the Prosecutor-General’s

press office.

Officials have said the more than 30 militants who seized the school on

September 1, 2004, the first day of the academic year, had been
determined to cause massive loss of life.

Many male hostages were executed, ruling out a negotiated solution.
Only
one captor survived, Nurpashi Kulayev, who was jailed last year for
life
for his part in the siege.

The film, apparently shot by an investigator on a hand-held camera with

the time and date shown on the screen, gives a graphic timeline of
events on September 3, as the three-day hostage crisis descends into
bloody chaos.

In one scene shot at lunchtime, escaping children, stripped to their
underwear, run into the arms of civilian and military rescuers and beg
for water.

Then, at 3.08pm, there are two loud blasts and sustained automatic
gunfire. A large cloud of smoke can be seen rising outside the school
building.

At 5.49pm, after the crisis is over, investigators examine some of the
boobytrap devices that did not go off, lying on a table in a small
room.
They are made of plastic bottles filled with ball bearings.

One voice is heard saying: “They said there were two explosions, a hole

in the wall and then they started running.

“The hole in the wall is not from this (kind of) explosion.

Apparently someone fired,” the voice continues, adding that many
victims
bore no sign of shrapnel wounds.

Next morning, a uniformed investigator surveys the carnage of the
school’s sports hall, where charred and mutilated bodies lie under
wreckage.

On camera, he points out that a large group of victims died under a
basketball hoop where one boobytrap exploded. But he also says the
other
devices did not go off.

He then pays close attention to a hole in the floor, next to a wall,
which he calls a “puncture of an explosive character”.

Other footage shows a large hole in the wall of the sports hall.

“For a long time we have been trying to clarify the nature of the first

explosion, and this tape proves that the explosions happened from
outside the building,” said Dudiyeva.

Dudiyeva’s interpretation matches the account of one member of the
Beslan commission who last year published a minority report. Yuri
Savelyev said two grenade rounds were fired on the sports hall from a
building controlled by security forces.

But, last December, the official commission exonerated the security
forces, saying “the cause of the explosion was the terrorists’
actions”.

Russia steps up military capability
Sat, 28 Jul 2007 23:11:00
Source: Agencies

Russian President Vladimir Putin
Responding to recent Western actions against Russia, Vladimir Putin has ordered his government to step up military and intelligence capabilities.

Having realized that Russia has become a target of Western multinational companies eyeing Russian resources, President Putin’s announcement indicates to the fact that Russia will not be bullied around.

“The situation in the world and internal political interests require the Foreign Intelligence Service to permanently increase its possibilities, primarily in the field of information and analytical support of the country’s leadership,” Putin said in meeting with military and security personnel in Moscow.

President Putin also referred to the US plans to deploy missile defense in Eastern Europe including Poland and the Czech Republic as one issue that posses top security challenge to Russia.

It is interesting to note that the US would like everyone to believe its proposed missile defense in Eastern Europe is directed against Iranian threats, but Russia has come to the conclusion that the plan is designed against itself because of its own proximity to Eastern Europe.

AN INDIAN doctor will be freed from custody after Australia’s chief prosecutor said a charge linking him to attempted terror bombings in Glasgow and London was a mistake.

Prosecutors yesterday withdrew the accusation against Mohammed Haneef in Brisbane Magistrates’ Court after a review of the evidence by the federal director of public prosecutions, Damian Bugg, found his office should never have recommended it.

US Congress ties Pakistan aid progress on terrorism

WASHINGTON: Congressional negotiators have agreed on legislation that would tie US aid to Pakistan to significant progress by Islamabad in cracking down on Al Qaeda, the Taliban and other militants, congressional sources said on Thursday.
The agreement, which must still be approved by the US Senate and House of Representatives, reflects growing concern in Washington that Al Qaeda has allegedly become entrenched in a safe haven in Pakistan’s tribal region near Afghanistan. The Pakistan aid provision is part of a massive bill implementing recommendations of the September 11 commission that was the result of compromise by House and Senate negotiators. It bars assistance in the fiscal year beginning October 1 until President George W Bush finds Pakistan is “making demonstrated, significant and sustained progress toward eliminating support or safe haven for terrorists,” according to a draft made available to Reuters. reuters

Pakistan test-fires missile

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 26: Pakistan on Thursday conducted a successful test of the indigenously-developed cruise missile Babur (Hatf-VII). The missile test is part of a continuous process for validating the design parameters set for the weapon system.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations, the range of Babur cruise missile, which was first tested in 2005, has been enhanced to 700kms.

The Babur, which has near stealth capabilities, is a low flying, terrain-hugging missile with high manoeuvrability, pinpoint accuracy and radar avoidance features.

The test was witnessed by the Chairman of Nescom, Dr Samar Mubarakmand, senior military officers and scientists of the strategic organisations.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomb attack in a restaurant near Islamabad’s Red Mosque complex on Friday killed at least 13 people, a majority of them police, and wounded 50, officials said, warning they could not rule out more attacks.

The mosque had been the centre of a protest by Islamist radicals earlier in the day.

Javed Iqbal Cheema, interior ministry spokesman, told a news briefing: “The suicide bomber entered the restaurant and blew himself up among policemen. Police were the target.”

“The head of the bomber has been found.”

Khalid Pervez, the top administrator in the city, told Reuters the authorities had information that more suicide bombers had sneaked into Islamabad.

“We had taken all precautionary measures but despite that this unfortunate incident took place. Such attacks cannot be ruled out in future as well,” Pervez said.

Pakistan has suffered a spate of suicide attacks by Islamist militants since a military operation to crush a Taliban style movement at the Red Mosque, or Lal Masjid, earlier this month.

Over 180 people have been killed, mostly police and soldiers, in the attacks aimed at destabilising the government of President Pervez Musharraf. Continued...
