There are other alternatives but not propping up the corrupt and ineffective Fatah would only underline the political and moral bankruptcy of the current generation of Israeli leaders, whose political careers have been based on selling the Israeli public a blatant fraud. The demise of Oslo would signal their own demise as well and Israeli politicians prefer to indulge in escapist fantasy, in a desperate bid to put off the day of reckoning as long as possible. But they too, like Fatah's Mahmoud Abbas, are shorn of the political popularity needed to lead their country to an agreement and they too lack the effective means to implement it in the highly unlikely event one should be reached.

...they might try focusing on gaining a change of heart among the roughly 80 percent of Palestinians, those still seeking to undo the outcome of the 1948-49 war by defeating Zionism and constructing a 22nd Arab state atop Israel's carcass. This is the only thing Pipes got right...and it's not at all clear how we could go about doing it.
The modern nation state is a Western idea not really applicable to the Muslim Middle East. Arab loyalty is to land , religion, tribe. If Palestine was to revert to Islam and the Arabs, instead of the Turks, owned the land, they would be completely happy, regardless of whether they belonged to a small state or a large empire.
