What the NRA says about Fred
NRA web site
Posted on 06/21/2007 9:51:38 AM PDT by Robbin
I keep reading threads that claim Fred is "Weak" on the second amendment. So I went to the NRA's web site and searched. Here is what the NRA said about Fred when he was leaving the Senate. "U.S. Senator Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, announced he will not seek re-election this year. His support of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms will certainly be missed."
That's good enough for me. RUN FRED RUN

But doncha know that a GOA report says he’s “weak” on guns because he voted for campaign finance reform and Clinton’s surgeon general nominee? Of course, the GOA contributed to Thompson, along with the NRA.

Unless Vaclav Klaus gets into the race, Thompson is the best bet.

Not only did the NRA consider Fred to be a stauch supporter of the Second Amendment, but it contributed generously to his re-election bid, and Charlton Heston even campaigned for Fred in 94. Even GOA donated money to Fred's campaign.
By contrast, Mitt Romney as Massachusetts governor praised his state's tough gun laws, though he's since joined the NRA. Sen. John McCain has had scrapes with the NRA, though he's generally been protective of gun ownership. Giuliani, as New York City mayor, supported strong government restrictions on all firearms
When a federal appeals court overturned the DC gun ban, Fred's comment was typically short and to the point: "The court basically said the Constitution means what it says, and I agree with that."

And he voted for a bill that included a budget increase for BATFE, the gun tax agency.

NRA, hell. What’s GOA say about him? I’d trust that a lot more.

The GOA is apparently sweet on Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul. Mr. Hunter is fine with me but they had the nicest things to say about Mr. Paul. That tells me a lot about the GOA.

This is the Fred Thompson page of GOA. I don’t agree with their comment that Fred “unabashedly favors the odious McCain-Feingold...” and hope somebody with facts on his side (like you Sturm!) will try to set them straight.

And here is GOA on good’ol Fred
Voted for the Domestic Confiscation Gun Ban
On September 12, 1996, the Senate passed the Lautenberg gun ban as an amendment to the Treasury-Postal appropriations bill (H.R. 3756). The Lautenberg Domestic Confiscation Gun Ban disarms gun owners for small (misdemeanor) offenses in the home offenses as slight as spanking a child or grabbing a spouse. This lifetime ban, in certain cases, can even be imposed without a trial by jury. It is also retroactive, so it does not matter if the offense occurred 20 years ago. Thompson voted in favor of the amendment.
To: Graymatter
The GOA page is a joke. They characterize FT’s votes on a lot of bills as if the gun issue were the only one in the bills. Get a clue, GOA: There are other issues out there. If a bill covers some major issue, but has some minor thing that could be interpreted as anti-gun in it, and someone votes for the bill anyway, that’s not really an ANTI-GUN vote.
What a joke. GOA just lost a lot of credibility with me.

According to GOA he voted pro-gun 19 times and anti-gun 14 times... that’s about as middle of the road as you can get don’t you think?

According to GOA he voted pro-gun 19 times and anti-gun 14 times... thats about as middle of the road as you can get dont you think? Those "anti-gun" votes include votes for CFR and Clinton's surgeon general nominee, so take it with a giant chunk of salt.
