If the British soldiers had done that, they’d be dead.
The situation was a lot different with the Aussies. Still, the British command should have learned and given the troops more military support.
“If the British soldiers had done that, theyd be dead.”
Doubt it. The Iranians would never attack the British outright. If they (Iranians) had fired shots and killed it would have led to all out war. They attempted and succeeded in a political kidnapping.
The Brits made gross errors in tactics and their sailors and marines were caught without any support. The helo was refueling and surface combat ships weren’t in position to defend.
The Brit soldiers and marines boarding the vessel had no choice in giving up, but a few of them were an embarassment during capture and after release.
I think the Iranians learned from the Aussie experience that they needed more firepower if they were going to catch a boarding party, and came back with more when they caught the Brits

Had they begun firing at the Revolutionary Guards the Guards would have taken off..
Unlike the British in this incident the Iranians had a plan to capture hostages..
Not provide the British and the US forces an Excuse to blow hell out of them by killing a dozen or so Royal Marines..
Finally you know you get paid money to do the Job. Getting killed is not a pleasant prospect that is why you think in advance and have sufficient resources on hand..
Even former British Naval Officers were ashamed of that Marine Captain’s Conduct although in my mind it was no worse that that US Surveillance plane that crashed into a Chinese fighter and landed on a Chinese base.. Both of those Captains should be in Prison for dereliction of duty as far as I am concerned.
