Next they’ll require that mobile homes come with a voucher for a storm shelter and three days provisions.

Are you talking about a weather ban or telephone warning system? I already have the first. It has a battery crank, siren and light. I can also listen to tv:’)

The spin is amazing.

The truth is that people are being forced to buy something.

The weasel says that manufactures will provide something, like it is a free gift.

They should have flight data recorders.

Well, she could have proposed that the mobile homes be constructed of pre-cast concrete like storm drain culverts.

Just a weather band. It works pretty well though.

So tornadoes only destroy manufactured homes? Stick built homes are just as vulnerable - it’s just that there’s a stereotype of manufactured homes being tornado magnets.

True, their destruction is just so dramatic that it makes for good TV...and that is what people tune in for. I've seen plenty of destruction where there was not a trailer around for several counties.

Weather Radio alerts are worthless.

They squeal at 3AM because the “National Weather Service has issued a SEVERE Thunderstorm Warning.”

Hit the alarm tone when a tornado is roaring through my county, thanks. Anything more than that, and I’ll just turn the alarm off at night so I can get some sleep.

Yes, I’d like to have a widget that wakes me up for real problems in my area...not for a hailstorm or flash flood 5 counties away.

Nanny state at its worst.

The truth is that people are being forced to buy something.

Really? Like they are forced to buy GFI outlets in their new home because they are required in building codes? Or they are forced to buy a non-flushing toilet? Or corrosive environmental substitutes for treated wood....etc...etc...etc

Actually newer weather radios have Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) that allow you to tailor the warnings and watches to your county only if you like. I’ve got one and it works like a charm.

Your list only confirms how entrenched the nanny state has become in our lives.

Things like GFI’S should be a matter between the property owner and his insurance carrier.

Giving in to these nanny stater's has resulted in things like not being able to smoke in ones back yard, if one had a hankering to.

The end result is the government controlling your life or put differently, the loss of freedom.

I know some don’t care and would welcome doing mandatory workouts in front of a web cam, because it is for our own good, and these elitist actually believe some folks simply need their nanny.

I stand corrected! I did not know they had upgraded the alert tones/radios. I will check into them.

I do still have a beef with what the wx svc alerts boil down to... ping me if there’s a tornado rolling/sighted, etc. Don’t ping me about possible flash floods or possible hail or conditions for tornados.... at 3am. Call me when it’s time to hit the tornado shelter!

I'm on a fence to some extent lately.

On one hand, I moved out of city limits, and I can build whatever I want, however I want, and don't have to comply w/ building codes. I also have enough land that I don't care where a neighbor puts his septic system relative to my water well, and yet the county does still force me to get a permit for that. The people that buy 1ac lots are the ones who create the demand for that kind of permit protection.

OTOH, having seen the free-for-all that is construction/wiring/plumbing practice in China, the caribbean, mexico.....it is somewhat reassuring that UL has actually tested some of the products that are mandated by the local building codes when I go downtown for a drink!

With the SAME technology you can even modify the types of alerts and warnings to reflect your geographic area. For example, you can remove the avalanche warning (and they are in there) for South Carolina or a hurricane warning for your particular county in Kansas. There must be 30 or so different types of warnings that are out there.
