WASHINGTON — Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, who has been pressured heavily by the White House and Republican leadership to support a sweeping immigration overhaul, announced Thursday that she nevertheless will vote against reviving the bill when it returns to the Senate floor next week.
As No. 4 in the Senate GOP hierarchy, Hutchison is the highest-ranking Republican to break with her leadership on a domestic policy issue of signal importance to President Bush.
Less than three hours after Hutchison denounced the legislation as an unacceptable amnesty offer to illegal immigrants, fellow Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn said he, too, would oppose bringing up a bill he deemed "deeply flawed."
The Texans' one-two punch came a day after Georgia's two conservative Republican senators indicated their opposition, offering yet another sign of the fragility of a bipartisan immigration deal fully embraced by no one and criticized in many quarters. The issue has deeply split the Republican Party, pitting business interests that favor the Senate bill against a restive conservative base that views it as nothing more than a repeat of the 1986 amnesty.

I’ll bet you a beer that her “touchback” amendment doesn’t pass, and then she will vote NO on cloture to end debate. Note that I am not betting my house.
OTOH, I think Reid wants to use the “clay pigeon” procedure to vote on cloture to end debate before amendments are voted on, and I think she would vote NO on cloture in that case also.
I agree that her “touchback” amendment is still amnesty, and that’s what I wrote to every one of her staffers.

If they don’t get 60 YES votes on cloture there can be no vote on the bill itself. You understand how that works, right? In fact, almost certainly, voting against cloture is the only way to kill it, because there are too many Dems and RINOs to stop it on a simple majority vote.
I see more than one RINO who will vote for cloture and then vote against the bill when it passes. Anyone who does that voted to pass the bill, no matter what they say about the final vote.

If there is no cloture, then there isn't even a vote on the bill===> can't pass.
However, if there is cloture, then there is a vote on the bill... and passage only requires 51 yes votes.
THere are more than 51 Senators who will vote yes on the bill - so to prevent the bill from passing, we need to avoid cloture as doing so only takes 41 votes [instead of the 51 needed to avoid passage should cloture take place].
I'm not sure where you're going with your position - that KBH will vote no on cloture but yes on the bill. If enough [41] vote no on cloture, then there won't even be a vote on the bill.
Of course, they could always bring back the bill. But the same is true even if they end up voting on the bill and the result ended up no passage.

As best I can...
They couldn’t have found a better way to hoodwink us. I would give up trying to explain it as I see it and just let it play out in the next few days, but I think it’s too important to let it slide. Their method is SO deceitful. And the media is playing along, while we are caught between a rock and a hard place with this clay pigeon method of securing passage of the Bill, exactly the way they want it.
First, two weeks ago KBH and Arlen Specter put their heads together and came up with an amendment that they THINK will convince us that they rid the bill of amnesty. I do NOT agree. It does NOT, but be prepared for the love fest!!
At the same time, Reid’s ‘clay pigeon’ method of forcing the bill through, each time with a cloture vote that he KNOWS we are going to vote NO on, therefore also is allowing KBH and Specter, along with others, to get THEIR amendments in, while other amendments LESS favorable to illegals are OUT.

Yes, Voting NO on Closure is GOOD, I AGREE!
“it ‘kills the bill’,”... BUT, keep in mind that it is only does so temporarily...there will be a final vote... and what is going on behind the scenes is crucial to the outcome.
Why is it important to keep this in mind. Because each time Cloture fails and discussions begin again, new amendments get added. Reid gets to pick which amendments will be heard/voted on. He’s allowed to LIMIT those amendments. We know which ones he’s picked...the ones that are FAVORABLE to illegal aliens (like KBH’s ‘no amnesty amnesty’).
In my example of Kay...how are we being fooled? In almost every instance she has voted in favor of amendments favorable to illegals. She even voted against the amendment that would have taken amnesty out of the bill. If she’s against amnesty, like she says, why would she do that? Look at her voting record. Go through each amendment and see how she voted.
Less significant, but important in the scheme (add the media to the mix)...all along she has also joined us in voting NO on cloture, good,...so why is the media and she ‘announcing’ that she’s going to do it again, like it’s something new for her? It’s not like she’s saying, “Oh, I’ve decided I’m voting no on the final bill”, it’s only on cloture, the media wants us to think it’s on the final bill. Those less informed will think she’s changed her mind and leave her alone and stop harassing her to vote against the bill. But there’s more...
So why is she making a big deal about voting no, when she’s been voting no all along...it’s a maneuver to distract. And,
Because THEY have a plan. She, and others, will take advantage of cloture failing and discussions continuing, to add HER own amendment, just like they are all doing (like Bush throwing money at the fence). HOWEVER, she thinks her amendment will remove amnesty from the bill and the pro-illegals are going to make a BIG DEAL out of it.
The result will be that they are going to try to convince US and other Senators that amnesty is now OUT of the bill and when the final vote comes, supposedly without amnesty (and along with Bush’s money scheme for the border)...voila...they’ve had the chance to make us THINK they have guaranteed funding for border security and to THINK amnesty is out of the bill.... and on final vote, it WILL PASS.
Like I said...who the heck stays up all night thinking up yet another way to succeed in sellilng us out.

Heroes? Like hell they are! Their first instinct was to support legislation that had been fashioned in secret. They initially agreed with the contempt being heaped upon those who disagreed with them. These are the people you call heroes? The only reason they decided to say no to the bill they helped author is because they finally realized if they did vote for it, they would be out on their collective kiesters.
These people are not heroes. They are merely our employees who have forgotten their place.

Yes 86% of those Republican senator who voted to kill this bill 2 weeks ago are heros. They stood up to immense pressure from many lobbyists hired by unions, la Raza, Soros groups etc.. The liberal media and even Bush has been putting pressure on them to pass this bill. Whatever you make think of them you have to give 86% of Republican senators credit for voting the right way and saving America 2 weeks ago.

In addition to enforcing previous laws re: the fence, new border guards, and employee verification, Congress should initiate and pass into law the following common-sense legislation:
1. Breaking our sovereign laws is a felony punishable up to 10 years in prison and $50,000 fine.
2. English shall be our nation’s OFFICIAL language.
3. All current illegal aliens (whether through VISA overstays or illegal entry) will be given until July 4, 2008, to leave the United States. Those who do not leave shall be deemed felons and thereby punishable as stated above.
4. All U.S. employers, including subcontractors to those employers, shall lose their licenses to practice business in the United States if found guilty of knowingly or unknowingly hiring illegal aliens. Take a breath. There is too much hyperbole in this world as it is.
Of course, I do not want the total destruction of the GOP and I alone certainly can’t accomplish that task even if I tried. What I do want is my representatives to know that they work for me, not Ted Kennedy, not the RNC, not La Raza, not even for the groups that give them big money. I and my neighbors are their employers not their adoring fans. I don’t care what the Democrats do or how many of them are corrupt. I take that as a given. I do care about those I work and help finance into office.
I do not object to Saxby Chambliss trying to find middle ground with the Democrats on this issue. That is his job and I even think parts of the bill are beneficial, but I will not sanction arrogance.
I will not tolerate my “employee” calling me or implying I am ignorant or a bigot because I happen to disagree with his approach. I want a Senator who understands where he comes from and who he represents. And if I believe he thinks he is better than those who pay his salary, it is time for him to go! In this debate, Saxby stepped over that line and he will need to work doubly hard to regain my trust!
If that constitutes the destruction of the Republican Party, then so be it!
