There was speculation that Smith might support this bill. But Smith got religion after hearing from thousands of his constituents. Smith calls this bill 'back-door amnesty.'

Don’t care how long it took for him to find the old time religion. As long as they get the message. And it’s an added plus when they come out and slam it as amnesty of any kind.

That’s progress baby.

I’ve heard Sen Mitch McConnel from Kentucky refered to as the GOP leader in the Senate but if he’s leading I don’t know who’s following. Seems the only folks who want this bill are Bush, McConnel, Lott and Graham.

'back-door amnesty.'

If by back-door he means the door that faces the street and has lights by it and a nice paved walkway leading to it from the drvieway.

But anyway: Here's what is stupid. If they are going to do amnesty, I would prefer that they just do it. Why hire all the new bureaucrats? Why make people travel home and pay 5K? You're just harassing them, or taxing them, really. It serves no purpose. Why harass people you are going to make citizens?

Now, the answer, that I have speculated on, is that this is all designed to be amnesty for mexicans only. But, they can't say that, so they create a bureaucratic mess that Mexicans can get through (due to proximity) much easier than anyone else.

McCalien lover has now begun to understand the magnitude of his error. He’s talking about the challenges his candidacy faces, blah, blah, blah.

He’ll be deader than dead by Labor Day if not sooner. And I’m going to love every second of it. Sorry for him because he’s served the nation and sacrificed greatly, but he’s grown arrogant and out of touch.

He should resign and retire. Go play with some of friends along the border.

Republican Senators are riding to the rescue to save America as seen on this thread. But everyone is still blaming the GOP. Where are the Democrats/Socialists ? Democrats are still plotting to destroy America. And this is how they are planning to do it:

Liberals,Democrats, and Bush want to turn the U.S.A into a socialist Venezuela or a 3rd world country with the passage of this Amnesty bill:

Not all of the reasons given by the left are wrong. Two reasons I can think of where the left is correct are:

1. Rampant immigration is going to (and already has) depressed wages for people without college degrees. The trade unions have been coming out against these bills as they hear from more and more of their members just how many illegals have taken jobs (well paying jobs) from the trades on construction sites.

2. The environmental aspect isn’t far off base. From the trash strewn through public lands near the borders, to the crush on natural resources in the west (esp. water), there is no doubt that the southwest/west is quickly reaching ‘carrying capacity’ in some areas. Adding more people is simply not good long-term policy.

You know, I’ve never, ever seen a candidate who seemed to be so aware of “public opinion” in his populist campaign for the presidency stand so pat on a position so abundantly out of favor with voters.

McCain’s positions on most everything else are designed to curry favor with polls and bipartisan “conventional wisdom.”

Aren't all of these Republican senators that have committed to killing this bill? Doesn't anyone see the obvious menace and threat the Democrat party is to America, liberty, and the American people?

Does the liberal media have us so trained that the only time we talk about someone being a Republican is when we bash all Republicans when a liberal RINO pretending to be a a Republican like Lott, McCain, Graham, Bush, Hagel,Specter, does something to hurt America?

86% of Democrat Senators voted to end debate and so to pass this Amnesty bill that would allow 20 million illegals to bring to the U.S.A. their family members thus destroying the U.S.. Unions are lobbying congress to pass this horrible Amnesty bill.

The AP is trying to put the blame on the GOP for this Amnesty. You don't see the threat that the Democrat party and unions are to liberty and America?

I am quoting a reliable conservative Michelle Malkin Look at all the unions and liberal Soros groups in that list that are lobbying congress and meeting with them bribing them and threatening them to pass this Amnesty::

Who is the “Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform?” An umbrella group for every major pro-open borders outfit–many of which receive generous taxpayer subsidies. From a March 2007 press release:

A coalition of local immigrant advocates, national policy groups, labor unions, faith-based groups, and ethnic organizations have come together under the umbrella of the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CCIR) to mount an unprecedented nationwide campaign to support passage of workable comprehensive immigration reform legislation in Congress this year.

CIR launched its effort over the weekend in Washington by bringing together field organizers from 29 states to hammer out strategy and refine legislative targets. In addition, the campaigns Strategy Council met to consider legislative strategy and policy priorities. The members of the Strategy Council are:

ACORN, Asian American Justice Center, Center for American Progress, Center for Community Change, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), Denver Area Labor Federation, El Centro, Inc., El Pueblo, Hate Free Zone, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform, LA County Federation of Labor, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, LULAC, Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, MALDEF, NAACP, NAKASEC, NALACC, National Capital Immigrant Coalition, National Council of La Raza, National Immigration Forum, National Immigration Law Center, Nebraska Appleseed, New York Immigration Coalition, PCUN/CAUSA, SEIU, SEIU 32BJ, SEIU Florida Healthcare Union, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, UNITE HERE, UNITE HERE Local 226 Las Vegas, UNITE HERE New Jersey State Council, United Farm Workers, United Methodist Church - General Board of Church and Society.

You’ve completely missed the thread here.

a) I don’t support the Democrats, or the unions.
b) In my above reply, I said that there were two reasons why the left was correct to oppose this bill — unskilled worker pay and environmental reasons.
c) the list of unions you give are not trade unions. They’re government employee unions.
d) As far as I’m concerned, on this immigration bill, the biggest enemy to the US is the Catholic Church.

You said unions are against this Amnesty bill. I showed you a link that shows several unions that are lobbying congress to pass this Amnesty bill including the United Farm Workers. Is that a government union too? So what if some are government unions ("that depends on what is is"). That was only a partial list too. I'm going to be back and post more unions that are lobbying congress to pass this Amnesty. Yes it angers me people are giving unions and democrats who are leftist, socialists working to destroy the U.S. a pass.

86% of Democrat Senators voted to end debate and so to pass this Amnesty bill that would allow 20 million illegals to bring to the U.S.A. their family members thus destroying the U.S.. Unions and Democrats have the same positions. After Amnesty democrats get more voters and Unions get more members. sure there is lip service but the proof is in the pudding the 86% of Democrats who voted to pass Amnesty 2 weeks ago.

The AP is trying to put the blame on the GOP for this Amnesty.

I am quoting a reliable conservative Michelle Malkin Look at all the unions and liberal Soros groups in that list that are lobbying congress and meeting with them bribing them and threatening them to pass this Amnesty::

You're correct about that, they are worried about the undereducated losing jobs to illegals. Of course, their solution is also to unionize even the dishwashers at Denny's, too.

I've not heard the left make an enviro-attack on illegal immigration. All I hear them talking about is how all of us are polluting sacred mommy Earth, just by being here. Good points, though.

The backing of this bill by union leaders demonstrates that they are not looking out for their members (Just like Congress isn’t looking out for workers and taxpayers). Low-skill immigrants depress the wages of union members but the union leaders would rather have a union of 1 million members each making $10/hour than 500,000 members each making $15/hour.

Similar hypocrisy is apparent in the backing of the NAACP and Congressional Black Caucus...as a group, African Americans will lose the most from wage competition (and identity politics competition, etc.) by illegal immigrants. But the African American leadership has sold out the African American populace (Again).

Look at my other posts on this thread and you will see proof that unions are and have been actively lobbying congress for to pass this Amnesty bill.

It was my impression that the unions were generally against it, but nothing they do surprises me anymore.

If unions and Democrats were so opposed to this Amnesty like the liberal media says then why did they vote 86% of them to pass the bill then?

I would guess that their moonbat base is not nearly as fired up as we conservatives are. You go over to DU, and you see that they really don't want this bill, but the fringe of the party doesn't have a lot of influence with your average everyday Rat voter.

My bet: they've been hearing about it from the liberals, but not nearly as forcefully as we've made our points about it. Besides, whose head is generally thicker, a Republican's (who has not lost touch with reality, ala Graham) or a Democrat's? I've been appealing to my liberal Senators about this from the left, I know damn good and well that Hillary and Chuckie will not even hear about something that uses the word 'amnesty' in it.
