KEY LARGO A federal agency is examining a severed goat's head found in the Marine Mammal Conservancy canal to determine whether it played a role in the death of a 3-day-old dolphin.
The head hornless and with its jaw wired shut was found inside a plastic bag floating in the canal on the day of the calf's death.
The National Marine Fisheries in Silver Spring, Md., is testing the head, the dead dolphin and water from the canal for any solutions or chemicals that could have contributed to the death of the calf, dubbed "Wilson."
Conservancy President Robert Lingenfelser told deputies that "activists" may have been responsible, according to a Monroe County Sheriff's Office report. He said he believed it was sent as a warning for the conservancy to stop its dolphin rehabilitation work.
"Activists will be activists," Lingenfelser told The Citizen, declining to name those he believes were responsible.
Lingenfelser last month filed a harassment complaint with the Sheriff's Office against conservancy founder and former director Rick Trout, who he said was filming facility activities from across the same canal where the goat's head was found.
Trout laughed off Lingenfelser's suggestion that activists placed the head in the canal.
"Robert obviously doesn't understand animal activists," he said. "Animal activists wouldn't harm any animal to make a point. I don't hide anything. The actions I would take wouldn't come close to harming another animal."
Dolphin activist Russ Rector, who has a long history of publicly feuding with Lingenfelser and accusing him of seeking publicity and profiting from marine mammal rehabilitation, also denied any role.
"The Marine Mammal Circus needs to be closed. I absolutely did not have anything to do with this. That's not my style," he said. "When I get a piece of Robert, it will be face to face."
Mark Oswell, national media officer for the National Marine Fisheries' Law Enforcement Division, said lab results should take about two weeks.
"I have dealt with several animal deaths this week, but a severed goat's head in a canal is a first," he said. "This is highly unusual. We are aware of the situation involving activists down there and know this sort of thing charges people up pretty well."
The calf was born June 11 to a deaf Atlantic bottlenose dolphin in a birthing pen at the conservancy at Mile Marker 102.2, bayside. The mother, "Castaway," was named after the cove near Vero Beach where she stranded in November.
Preliminary results of a seven-hour necropsy conducted immediately after Wilson's death did not reveal the cause of death. Pathologists who performed the procedure said the calf was the healthiest they had seen.
“Animal activists wouldn’t harm any animal to make a point. I don’t hide anything. The actions I would take wouldn’t come close to harming another animal.”
Crap.
My breed club has had to be put on alert quite a few times because the peta freaks were threatening to “free” dogs from their crates, vehicles and exercise pens at shows.
They’ve succeeded in doing so, already.
What do those idiots ~think~ will happen if freaked-out sighthounds are running 40mph through unfamiliar areas, often near highways?
This guy needs to be, or should have been, arrested for treason on that one. Those dolphins are trained to find under water mines and the like. They are part of national security.
"Let me tell you something. Flipper never gets that movie."
Here in NC, a person will buy a live cow and slaughter it to cook at a cookout for 1-200 Hispanics of legal and illegal status and their friends.
They discard the head and entrails like this head was found, goats are cheaper and more easily slaughtered than cows, and not many citizens are allowed to slaughter their own livestock anymore.
Yeah, but why wire its mouth shut? Weird.
Just making sure that scapegoat doesn't let any sins get re-told.
Yes, a scapegoat! Wonder if Hillary was in the neighborhood lately?
Mistaken identity - they had mistaken the goat for a moose - apparently wired the mouth shut because the perp’s sister was there and they didn’t want her bitten.
Trent Lott better check and see if his goats are still there....his electric fence may not be working well (just like his border security plan)
Remains of a Santaria, ritual?
You nailed it. I have a good friend, half Mexican half Korean, he occasionally goes to South Dallas to hang out with the real Mexicans and they do this goat slaughter in their back yard.
He was going there last night, he told me it was hell getting out of there cause they loved him so much. I asked if they were going to kill the fatted goat for him. He said they might slaughter one of the herd.
As an aside, I was talking about illegal immigration with him, wondering out loud if these people wouldn't become good Americans one day, replacing the liberal whiners. He looked me in the eye and said "look man, these people don't give a shit about America. They are here to make money and thats it." That was before his full blood Mexican dad (American though) told him "Everything thats wrong with America you can trace back to the Democrats".
I have never wavered since.
PETA is glad to do just that. They don't care about animals any more than a snake would.
BINGO!, Wasn't it Atlanta that was going to pass a law because of illegals slaughtering goats in the back yard for some holiday?
My impression, as well. Someone’s “culture” sees any open water as a disposal system. Curry goat is Very Popular at feasts.
Well, that’s a lie.
Activists released one of the descendants of Flipper that was held at a dolphin park on one of the keys. The dolphin had been raised since captivity and had no survival skills.
When they finally found the dolphin, it had starved nearly to death.
wonder which group slaughters goats and cuts there heads off????
must have been the Jews/Mormons/Catholics/Buddists
could not have been the religion of peacers!!!...they only cut off heads of humans!!!
