In an event that marked the first time a Vietnamese president has visited the U.S.since the end of the Vietnam War, President Bush and President Nguyen Minh Triet met on Friday at the White House.
Although the discussions centered on trade negotiations, Bush said he stressed the importance of human rights issues.
According to NPR.org, Triet said that, although he and Bush differed, "our approach is that we would increase our dialogue in order to have a better understanding of each other."
Orange County Vietnamese community leaders, concerned about Vietnam 's human rights violations, conferred with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi earlier last week in advance of Pelosi's own meeting with Triet.
