Here's the root of the problem. When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed his revised budget last month, he said he was "making the difficult decisions to slow spending growth ... ."
Excuse me? The difficult decisions to slow spending growth? What's so difficult?
It must be an irrepressible love of spending other peoples' money that makes it difficult, as the governor confesses it is for him, to merely slow down the annual increase in government spending.
Notice that we never hear the governor complain about how difficult it is to spend more. Every year he's been office, Gov. Schwarzenegger has signed a budget that spent more than was spent the year before. Does anyone remember him complaining about that?
Expect yet another increase in spending when the Legislature finally delivers the 2007-2008 fiscal year budget for Schwarzenegger's signature in the coming days. Don't expect Schwarzenegger to complain. He appears to enjoy it.
Indeed, the governor's been on a multibillion dollar joyride since his election in 2003. State spending under his not-so-restrained stewardship has increased in that period from $107 billion to what's expected to be $145 billion or more next year for all purposes, general and special funds. (The general fund will increase next year to $103.7 billion from this year's $102.2 billion.)
Rather than tell constituents he wants to spend less of their money, Gov. Schwarzenegger continually reminds us he's seeking creative ways to find new sources of "revenue" (which is government-speak for "your money") for him to spend.
This is typical of how government spending at all levels has exploded in the lifetime of anyone reading this column. It starts by assuming that spending more is good, and even slowing down the increase in spending is a "difficult decision."

Arnold will need the money to build his New Berlin Wall to keep the taxpayers from leaving. I don’t think that “Every day in California is your lucky day” propaganda series is really working. But maybe it’s my just my relatively new vantage point up here in Montana.

When the party comes calling advise them. "No more until you reform."
When a CAGOP official asks why you feel alientaed by the party, give them this three word answer. "Amnesty and Austrians."
AHNULD SEZ:
"But I'm a FISCAL conservative"
Ah, the ol' "vote RINO" crowd here never learns from the past. But the rest of us do. Imagine how screwed up our federal budget will be if "fiscal conservative" Rudy Giuliani gets elected.
But haven't you heard? California is sooooooooooo much BETTER under Ahnuld instead of Gray Davis. Ahnuld has done a ton of things better than Davis, we just can't think of them at the moment.
I remember the wars here on FR between the “Tom(McClintock)Bots” and the “ArnieBots” during the Davis recall election. Looks like the McClintock supporters were right...Aaaaahnold has turned out to be a raging RINO. I voterd for McClintock but left CA in 2005 when a job opportunity opened up for me out of state.
Billy! That's two homers in a row!! You da comitted conservative MAN!!!
