'Most severely wounded' soldier endures: blind, quadriplegic, struggling to breathe
International Herald Tribune ^ | 6/23/07

TAMPA, Florida: He lies flat, unseeing eyes fixed on the ceiling, tubes and machines feeding him, breathing for him, keeping him alive. He cannot walk or talk, but he can grimace and cry. And he is fully aware of what has happened to him.

Four years ago almost to this day, Joseph Briseno Jr. was shot in the back of the head at point-blank range in a Baghdad marketplace. His spinal cord was shattered, and cardiac arrests stole his vision and damaged his brain.

The 24-year-old is one of the most severely injured soldiers — some think the most injured soldier — to survive.

I hope he knows what a hero he is to his Countrymen, his parents too.

God bless them.

Anyone else thinking of Metallica’s “One”?

I honestly don’t know what to ask for him in prayer, except a swift and merciful death.

“We always have hope. One day at a time — that’s the way we live our lives,” the elder Briseno said. “We’re so lucky to have him. He was a very good son from the very beginning. God gave Jay to us and he’s a blessing to us.”

Father, deep in the night I lift up your child, Joseph Briseno, to You. You are God, and You alone can help Him...

You can help him through our Hands. Let us remember that we are Your Agents on Earth: let us help him be what he can be, and move beyond what he cannot be.

Joseph Briseno can hear, he can speak, and he can think. He has family who love him and believe in him. He has struggled to survive, and he is here because You have a purpose for him.

Tonight, let Joseph Briseno be given hope. I ask this in Jesus name; I am not worthy to come to You and ask for anything, but You still give me the gift. I use this gift - the gift of prayer - to ask for hope to fill the heart of Joseph, and a miracle of healing to fill his body. You are God, and You hear my prayer...

That was my first instinct, too. Metallica, One

For those who don't know, much of the video has scenes from Johnny Got His Gun (film)

God Bless that young man. He’s gone through so much in his young life. I will be praying for him.

This is so sad. I remember reading about this incident years ago when it happened. This soldier was, I believe, in a shopping market looking at DVD’s to buy when someone came up right behind him and shot him point blank in the back of the head. I didn’t know he survived.

Thank you, dandelion. This poor kid needs a million more. I’ll do my best later tonight but it won’t be as good as yours.

Makes me mad because I know exactly why the AP wrote the article, why PBS covered it, why the left loves stories like this one. Not one prayer from any of them. But I’m sure
Freepers will have a different reaction and will pray for him.

Thank You Lord Jesus for Joseph Briseno Jr.
Please watch over him.
Please guide the medical staff as they tend to him.

Please comfort Joseph and his family and given them
the peace that passes our understanding that only You
can give.

Your will be done.

In Jesus’ Holy name I submit this humble prayer.
Amen.

It would be nice if we could get an address for this young hero. He might appreciate knowing how much his brothers and sisters care about him.
