He vastly underestimated his enemy, and his men wen decimated due to his idiocy. Sheridan and Sherman all wished to exterminate the native Americans, just as they had both opined about Southerners. Bigots and racists both. Of course Phil Sheridan would laud someone who was meeting his expectations and wiping them out.
