It may be wishful thinking, but the increasing evidence that the US military does not think highly of the way the Iraqi leadership has used the extra time afforded by the surge in American troop strength raises the possibility that Bush could begin to order a draw down of US forces in Iraq by the end of the year.
While he could not claim victory, he certainly could lay the blame (with justification) on the Iraqi regime for failing to bring about a genuine coalition with the Sunnis and for not dividing up the oil revenue. He could begin to pull out American troops based on Hillarys rationale that American troops have done their share but the Iraqi government has not done its share.
Would such a move work politically? You bet it would! Nixon, forewarned by Republican loses in Congress in 1970, accelerated troop withdrawal from Vietnam and even had Kissinger announce that peace is at hand in the days before the 1972 general election. It worked like a charm and propelled him to an easy re-election victory.
Bush could still do a lot to save his party by beginning to pull out.
What a deceptive headline. There’s not one shred of anything in this short piece to support the suggestion that Bush is pulling out.
“It worked like a charm....”
Not according to many South Vietnamese that I know.
pull back. appease. pull back. lets retreat. and retreat some more.
that is a winning formula.
I’m waiting for DEBKA to put out a more definitive opinion.
Actually the South had won several key battles as I recall on their own after/during our withdrawal, and were seen as a viable government with our support. However, in the wake of Watergate the Congress decided to not go through with our support of the South (in terms of arms and money) as had been promised by Nixon.
Bush could still do a lot to save his party by beginning to pull out.If Bush wanted to save his party he would strike Iran and Syria, simultaneously, with what amounted to a Mesopotamian von schlieffen plan (a lightening strike on 2 fronts to secure the center), and then attack, with equal vigour but twice the fire power, that moronic immigration bill.
To dick morris,We shall see,DICK.
Save the folking idiot party? the party may not be worth saving if they are all acting like a bunch of politicians and wusses.
Dick Morris has no clue what he’s talking about. If President Bush can’t claim victory then what would be the incentive to pull out now because the next President would have to be the one to declare defeat?
Last time Bush listened to Dick Morris, he came up with “clean alternative energy independence” policy based mostly on corn ethanol - we know what a disaster that turned out to be.
The lesson? Stop listening to Dicks.
Morris needs to adjust his meds. This is truly weird stuff.
This aint about some sorry political party. It’s about the future of the free world. There is no vacuum. Whereever good retreats, evil takes up the space.
He’s a joke.
What’s this moron talking about. We have a victory whether the Iraqi’s have a democracy or not.The issue is these attacks are sponsored by Iran, they have been killing our troops daily and we have not been holding them accountable.
To get out of Iraq we would have to take out Iran to stabilize that region or we’ll just be returning to protect our oil supplies.
The USSR kept warring ethnics from slaughtering each other.
Saddam did the same in Iraq.
Lifting the lid of dictatorship in both cases provides an opportunity for the resolution of many little wars.
As soon as we leave, Iraqis will fall on each other with a vengeance.
DEBKA's still waiting for confirmation from infowars.com.
Dick sucked on toes so long his brain went poof.
