Why don't we bring back the Fairness Doctrine and expand it to cover television and newspapers?

Alternatively, if we bring back the Fairness Doctrine for radio only, we can point out that radio is now fair and balanced so we no longer need to fund National Public Radio. Zero it out next fiscal year. Do the same with PBS.

Congressman Billybob explained that very thing this morning.

Newspapers have First Amendment Rights and as there are now many television alternatives, cable, satellite that radio doesn't fall into.

As to NPR, liberals have never considered it to be "biased" don't you know. Neither do they consider NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, and PBS "biased."

Just those pesky conservative talk shows are the "problem that we must deal with" (Trent Lott.)

I have a better idea: why don't we obey the Constitution?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Allow me to translate: it is unconstitutional for the government to decide what newspapers are fair and what newspapers are not fair. Period.

And it is unconstitutional to censor radio transmissions, too - unless it everyone is censored. As it is, of course, you and I - nearly everyone - is completely censored from emitting radio waves in the "broadcast band," while the government's favorites have licenses. The licensees have the right to broadcast, and you and I have the right to listen - and the duty to shut up. A situation which stands the Constitution on its head.
