28 Mile Virtual Fence is Rising Along the Border [Over Budget, Behind Schedule]
The New York Times ^ | June 21, 2007 | Randal C. Archibold

But glitches with the radar and cameras have forced the project to miss its June 13 starting date, just as Congress focuses anew on border security in the Senate measure to overhaul immigration law.

Officials at the Homeland Security Department insist that Boeing, which has a $67 million contract to develop the project and others, will soon put it back on track, though they are not providing a new completion date.

Boeing referred requests for comment to the department.

“We are making good progress,” the executive director of the border program, Gregory Giddens, said.

Democrats in Congress are questioning why the problems were not disclosed at a hearing on the project on June 7. It was only afterward, in communication to Congressional staff members, that the delays came to light.

“The department’s failure to be forthcoming and the repeatedly slipping project deadlines not only impede Congress’ ability to provide appropriate oversight of the SBInet program, but also undermine the department’s credibility with respect to this initiative,”...

Maybe if gas prices keep rising they won’t be able to drive the extra 28 miles. Maybe?

The government is incompetent when dealing with security. The only area where it has competence is granting amnesty. They’ve done it several times, very successfully.

Even a real fence is crap if there is no intent to enforce the laws for breaching the fence or for being in the country illegally. Only about 40% of illegal aliens sneak across a border. The rest come in legally but overstay their tourist/student/etc visas. I’m sure alot of politicans will be happy to show how they ‘secured the border’ but allow all sorts of illegal presence in the country to flourish. Securing the border is just one tiny part of soveriegnty. Accept no substitutes.

Just another scam to channel the fence money to business for expensive gee-gaws that won’t do the job and will soon wear out.
This lets them say they spent the money on a fence without actually slowing down the illeagls too much.

Concrete and steel have no moving parts, won’t wear out any time soon and are more readily available.

How about a virtual fence that consists of a smart minefield and several of those South Korean or Israeli sentry guns?

“...In addition, officials expect to have 370 miles of physical fencing by the end of next year.”

That ain’t now, nor is it last year, or the year before, nor is it 1986. We will believe it when we see it thank you good night.

NO AMNESTY!

Or the coyotes will have to take a little less profit to deliver them here. 16 people/van, about $.50 each.

Nothing beats a little cement, chain link and some razor wire. Cheaper too.

Razor wire’s a good idea, along with armed guards.

I wish someone would ask Her Thighness how she would feel about giving up her bodyguards in favor of a “virtual bodyguard patrol.”

I think her life expectancy would be about the same as an Army 2nd Lt. arriving in Viet Nam in 1967.

On top of that, just imagine the joy of guarding THAT body!

The drop in donations, unpopular poll results, and the phone/email assault don’t seem to have gotten through to them, yet. I wonder what it’s going to take?

I’ll believe in virtual fences when there’s one around the White House.

"If successful, hundreds of such towers could dot the 6,000 miles of the Mexican and Canadian borders."

Closer to 1,900 if my math is correct.

Given the typical performance of systems I've had some experience with, there will be more repair technicians at or near the border than Border Patrol agents - or the government will simply let the electro-gadgets gather bird's nests while the agents do their jobs the old fashioned way.

On the other hand, razor wire, in layers, works. Claymores work. Route interdiction works. Armed aerial surveilance works. Etc.

I’ve already notified the IRS that I’ll be paying my taxes with a virtual check next April...

If they spot any of the actual funds, they can send an INS (ICE or whatever flavor of the month it happens to be) to pick it up.
