Immigrant licenses off table

Sen. Gil Cedillo opted to keep the Real ID Act bill alive.

Lacking the votes, state Sen. Gil Cedillo agreed Monday to strip his signature bill of language that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses, perhaps putting the issue to rest for the year.

Instead, a watered-down Senate Bill 60 was approved 13-0 by the Assembly Transportation Committee. The amended bill states it is the intent of the Legislature to review the Federal Real ID Act of 2005 and steps that need to be taken to implement it.

Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, had tethered the issue of illegal immigrants and driver's licenses to the Real ID Act, which is being implemented by the federal government to create a national standard for driver's licenses.

The regulations -- which will require all 23 million California drivers to go in person to Department of Motor Vehicles offices -- do not prohibit states from issuing licenses to illegal immigrants.

But some Democrats on the Transportation Committee, which includes several newly elected members, indicated they were unlikely to support driver's licenses for illegal immigrants. So before the hearing, Cedillo deleted the provisions dealing with illegal immigrants to keep his bill alive.

No mention was made during the hearing of the issue that has stirred emotions on both sides of the debate: Should illegal immigrants be allowed to drive legally in California?

This isn’t about licenses for immigrants as the headline falsely says. It is about licenses for ILLEGAL immigrants.

Gil will be back with the rest of his La Raza tribalists. Mexico uber alles for them. Amazing how you can find people who idolize that pit

Few days ago America played Mexico in soccer and won. The game was in Chicago but the raucous crowd was cheering Mexico. The immortal quote of an American player was “Against Mexico, it’s always an away game” http://www.google.com/search?tab=nw&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLD_en___US207&q=%22Against%20Mexico%2C%20it%27s%20always%20an%20away%20game%22

Gil Cedillo, along with most politicians, deliberately try to blur the line between LEGAL AND ILLEGAL. They think we're stupid and don't know the difference.

Warning to other states: DON'T ELECT PRO-MEXICO POLITICIANS AT ANY LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT!!
