Proponents of the Senate immigration bill were unable to block an amendment Wednesday on identification requirements, casting doubt on whether the overall measure will clear a crucial test vote set for Thursday morning.
The bill survived its first cloture motion Tuesday by a vote of 64 to 35. Only five senators would need to change their position for the bill to collapse Thursday.
It just so happens that four senators who voted Tuesday to move the bill forward have since seen the Senate reject their amendments, potentially moving some of them into the no column. The list includes Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.), Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ).
At least one of them, Webb, has indicated that he is a likely to oppose the bill.
Menendez has not made a decision, his spokesman said. Dodds office did not respond to a request for comment. Bond was reportedly moving against the bill.
And a fifth senator, Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), said he would vote against cloture.
Its a tight vote, said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), the chief Democratic negotiator. We are going to work, and work hard.
Cecilia Munoz, a lobbyist for National Council of La Raza, said: We really truly dont know how this will play out. If this bill goes down, it is a tragedy.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a leading critic of the bill who, along with a cadre of other Republicans senators, spent the day objecting to procedural motions, said the turn of events was a positive one.
They tried to railroad this through today, but we derailed them, DeMint said in a statement. Americans need to call their senators and tell them to reject this bill, reject this process, so we can secure the border first. We have another chance to defeat this mess of a bill, and Americans know that a vote for cloture tomorrow will be a vote for amnesty.
I’m willing to bet on Nelson as a no. He’s seemed far more conservative to me on some crucial votes than has Chuck Hagel.
As I recall, he voted no on the last go around with this garbage.
Flaming socialist Dodd a no vote? I’ll believe it when I see it. Amnesty ping!
Looks like we’ve got a shot to stop the insanity train. Good job today from the patriots in the Senate.

Meanwhile, Kennedy and Bush are lurking around, eager to twist arms.
Woo hoo bump.

Lets hope the Amnesty dies, so Bush and the GOP senators could ram judges through. If Bush actually does that , then his approvals might climb back into the 40s.

You are kidding, right? As soon as this dies they take up the Cheney wiretap investigation.
Without a Justice Department to do anything for the last six years(the RATS effectively killed any investigations into their actions) the RATS are running wild.
This country is about to do a redux of 1992 except that a Bush won’t be up there to be humiliated. Anyone who votes for this when the bubble economies are bursting is waiting for electoral slaughter. All one has to do to beat any of these shamnesty clowns is to run a campaign add with the LaRazaistas marching under their National Socialist banners declaring victory over America and the people who pay the bills. The swing voters are not going to be happy next year.

For the Democrats, I would strongly suggest taking a pro-union/anti-illegal alien stance (i.e. they are taking our jobs) rather than using the conservative national security angle.

Color me cynical. How do we know those they say they will switch to No or are entertaining the idea of switching will follow through? The white house money truck is backing up to the senate chamber. Big George is spending. “Amnesty for the house! It’s on me.”
Can you believe this friigin crap??
Just what we have to go through to save our country??
I’m pissed!
“At least nine other senators told FOX News they are undecided or leaning toward a no vote. They include Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor, Jim Webb, Jeff Bingaman, Robert Menendez and Republican Sens. Ted Stevens, Lisa Murkowski, Pete Domenici, Judd Gregg and John Ensign.
