This Sounds Like a Solid No
WSJ via NRO ^ | 6/28/07 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

..."This bill is toast," he said in an interview. "This bill will never become law, and consequently I don't see why I should continue down this path. It's not going to pass the House ever. So we're never going to get a bill. So why go through this torture?"

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Culture/Society
KEYWORDS: aliens; amnesty; congress; illegals; immigrantlist
I don't know who the "he" is that is quoted since I don't have access to the WSJ article but it sounds like positive news.

What time is the vote today???

I read somewhere yesterday that it’s supposed to be around 10:30. I imagine that to be EDT.

There is no doubt we need to do something with the ilegals in this country.

IMO what needs to be done is to enforce the laws already on the books. We need to defend our borders from those sneaking in and allow those who are legitimately on the list to enter to do so. We need to force those who entered ilegally to return to their country of origin and get on that list if they wish to return. Or at least to register for the list and become legal. If they wish to become Americans they should go through the process and the process could be made easier and quicker to go through. If they do not wish to become Americans they should have to go back home every year so others could get a chance to come and decide if they wish to become Americans. Living here for years as an illegal or someone hoping to take back our country for Mexico is definitely not an option.

Great to hear that.

According to Roll Call, that clay pigeon technique could also itself end up killing the bill:

The answer is simple. So that Voters, who care about the future of the US of A, know who is worthy... and who is not, come Nov 2008, and beyond.

So if cloture fails today, will Reid pull the bill or keep trying?

Here is a list of the key staff contacts of the “Amnesty 8” Senators (plus Domenici) that are most likely to be persuaded to vote no on Thursday and derail amnesty. Many offices are putting calls straight to voicemail and they can just trash faxes (and letters take weeks to get through due to security). Hit Hill staff where they are so codependent - their Blackberries! Send email directly to staff - not just the generic Senate office mailbox. Contact their Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and Press Secretary. Make your voice heard!!

For the Democrats, I would strongly suggest taking a pro-union/anti-illegal alien stance (i.e. “they are taking our jobs”) rather than using the conservative national security angle.
