Beleaguered Immigration Bill Faces Do-or-Die Vote
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 28, 2007 | DAVID ROGERS

WASHINGTON -- The Senate immigration bill was bleeding support from the left and right, leaving President Bush in danger of losing a closely fought vote this morning to end debate and move toward passage.

"We're going to finish this legislation," vowed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.), and the White House worked into last night trying to salvage a narrow victory. But more than a half dozen Republicans and Democrats were at risk of defecting, and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), a leading opponent, predicted "there is a realistic chance the bill will fail."

House Republicans hurt the president's cause this week by passing a party resolution disapproving of the Senate bill. The sour Senate mood was captured by Sen. Pete Domenici (R., N.M.), who had voted with the president Tuesday to call up the bill, but said he would oppose the cloture motion to limit debate this morning.

Please keep calling. Our calls have worked so far and it looks like the Bush-Kennedy-McCain "amnesty for criminals" bill is on its way to oblivion.

...unless Bush attempts to issue the contents of the bill as a series of Executive Orders, and the Senate blocks any attempt by conservatives to overturn the Executive Orders.

The Executive Orders could be challenged in court, but that could take a while, and in the meantime, amnesty would be law, and irreparable damage would be done.

Anyone, correct me if I am wrong, as I am not especially familiar with the Executive Order procedures in the U.S. Government...they were not taught in my AP Government class way back when.

Under the Constitution Congress has “plenary” powers regarding citizenship and immigration. That means it is the prerogative of the legislative branch and executive orders, which implement policy positions of that branch, cannot be used as described and in so broad a fashion.

Doesn't mean Bush hasn't seriously thought about it.

Like you I’m convinced that emperor jorge intends to make this nightmare law no matter what he has to do.

In this case I think that could actually get him impeached.

Ah yes, this poor noble, courageous little bill is “beleaguered” and “imperiled”. How sensitive.

Good thing there are no agenda driven biases in the media at all, otherwise one might think that this is just another bought-and-paid-for scam by elitists who are determined to put those pesky uncooperative American models in their place by getting some fancy new imports that won’t ask too many questions or complain about working conditions, wages, etc.

Got it.

You think you have “freedom”?

What, freedom to have a law that at least 80% of Americans oppose get shoved down our throat? (And yes, folks, sadly I predict it WILL BE SHOVED)

And American men and women are halfway around the world to PROTECT OUR WAY OF LIFE?
My WAY OF LIFE didn’t, up until recently, mean I had to MARQUE UNO POR ESPANOL whatever the hell that means.

Call your House members today. The Senate is a lost cause. REPEAL THE 17TH AMENDMENT, because THE STATES WOULD NEVER CONSENT TO THIS BILL IN THE SENATE!

I keep thinking of Bush as General Jack Ripper from Dr. Strangelove who unilaterally starts a war with Russia:

General Turgidson, I find this very difficult to understand. I was under the impression that I was the only one in authority to order the use of nuclear weapons.

That's right, sir, you are the only person authorized to do so. And although I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it's beginning to look like, uh, General Ripper exceeded his authority.

But Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) still clung to the hope of saving the measure. "There are a lot of people who know this is better policy than the current system," he said of the measure. "There are a lot of people quietly hoping this thing passes, and there'll come a time where they'll have to not be quiet.

"they'll have to not be quiet." Sounds like the hateful threat of bigots. Is the Senator threatening violence? Has he been listening to too much talk radio? :)

What’s REALLY WIERD bout all this is how our elected “representatives” are totally ignoring the WILL OF THE PEOPLE who elected them.
It is hard to believe it is all about bribery—but that seems to be the best explanation.
After all is said and done, dollars do not vote. We can still VOTE THE BUMS OUT.
And we must.

* ^ * ^ *

Unfortunately, after all the illegals get in and are made “legal” they WILL be given voting rights. It will be O-V-E-R for Conservatives forever.
