President Felipe Calderon of Mexico reacted sourly to news of the Senate's rejection of the proposed immigration law overhaul, calling the senators' action "a grave error."
"It's a grave mistake first because it's a problem that's not being confronted, and with this evasive action the U.S. Senate is making it worse," Calderon told reporters in Mexico City during a joint news conference with President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, who is finishing a two-day visit to the Mexican capital.
"Secondly, because to close the door on legal immigration, the only thing the Senate does is open the door to illegal immigration" the Mexican president said, according to an account published by the newspaper Reforma on its Web page.
Calderon repeated his "repudiation and rejection" of plans to build a wall along much of the U.S.-Mexico border.
More than a tenth of Mexico's 103 million people are estimated to live in the United States, many of them illegally. Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans, and others from Central America, continue to cross the border every year illegally in search of work.
Mexico's emigrants last year sent nearly $25 billion home to family members. That money has become an important anchor in many rural communities and poor metropolitan neighborhoods.
Ortega, a one-time Marxist president of Nicaragua following that country's 1970s leftist revolution against a U.S.-backed dictator, was in Mexico City to strengthen ties with Mexico and also to visit the shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The Nicaraguan president had vowed to visit the shrine if he won election this year, which he did, returning to power 17 years after being voted out of office.

The Guatamala Mexican border could actually be controlled. And even more so at Panama Columbia. But for us to control the border at Guatamala and Mexico it would be a piece of cake. It’s going to take a huge American Mexican population to pull it off. They’ll have to turn on their old country and it’s rulers and hope they the rulers get cold feet and sell their political interest in the country to us. But that’s not going to happen for a while since we are still deluding ourselves into thinking we can stop it along a 1200 mile frontier. We have to kick the crap out of employers and that’s going be somewhat troublesome. I predict an uptick in violence because we didn’t sell out. It was a lose lose prop.
Naw. Just add it on to California -like the common joke, they can call it mexifornia.
That is an excellant idea!!! It will even keep the greenies happy that the animals can still get across, like crocodiles.
And if we block off Mexico effectively and they flip, everything flips south of the border domino style. and then it’s going to be the aborting faster than birthing wealthy eloi surrounded by a lot of nasty morlocks. But hey I am conflicted as hell on this issue so who knows. Today I was cheering the vote if only on principle. We don’t want more of the same. But, as mentioned that could be more problematic than we can see right here.
I think Calderon is right; it’s a shame the way we, here in the U.S., are treating his Mexican citizens. He should encourage them to return home immediately.
Ah, it just gets better. Mexico can order the Bushes around, but it looks like it isn’t as easy to order America around.

Dear Mexican President,
If your country is such a hell-hole that 12,000,000 of your citizens risk life and limb to leave it and come to ours, we hardly see a reason to take your advice on how to run ours.
I don’t doubt that the bulk of those immigrants are hard-working family oriented people. Indeed, that is their motivation, to make a better life for their family. And they came to realize that there was no way to counteract the corruption and oppression in their native country. Hence their desperate move. (Of course all did not have such a noble purpose in mind).
Do you fear their motivation? Are you glad to see them go lest they get the gumption to stay put and take back their own country? Are you afraid of 12,000,000 of them who now realize what living in a free country with unlimited opportunity is, all about coming home and demanding the same in their native land?
For too long the US has been the pressure relief valve for failed governments to the south of us. We’ve accepted individuals out of a sense of compassion for them individually. But we didn’t realize the unintended consequence of taking the most motivated away from their countrymen, leaving those unable to escape to the tender mercies of their oppressive governments.
Is that your fear, that you will have to face ALL your own people?

Why can’t we tax the money that they send to Mexico? Recently a Republican congressman introduced a bill to do just that, and a bill to do away with the anchor baby problem. Naturally, neither one of these bills went anywhere. I don’t understand why we can’t stop this practice. Keep them from sending so much $ home,and maybe they’ll go home.

It is an angle not covered at all here in the US.
Mexico is among the wealthiest of nations, with vast oil reserves, silver mines, timber - the list goes on and on.
So, what’s the problem again?

What an excellent idea! We ought to be able to do that. It’s better than my idea of just taxing it. Seize it. They were here illegally so the money they get is ill gotten gains. Nice one, Yo-Yo.
