President Felipe Calderon of Mexico reacted sourly to news of the Senate's rejection of the proposed immigration law overhaul, calling the senators' action "a grave error."
"It's a grave mistake first because it's a problem that's not being confronted, and with this evasive action the U.S. Senate is making it worse," Calderon told reporters in Mexico City during a joint news conference with President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, who is finishing a two-day visit to the Mexican capital.
"Secondly, because to close the door on legal immigration, the only thing the Senate does is open the door to illegal immigration" the Mexican president said, according to an account published by the newspaper Reforma on its Web page.
Calderon repeated his "repudiation and rejection" of plans to build a wall along much of the U.S.-Mexico border.
More than a tenth of Mexico's 103 million people are estimated to live in the United States, many of them illegally. Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans, and others from Central America, continue to cross the border every year illegally in search of work.
Mexico's emigrants last year sent nearly $25 billion home to family members. That money has become an important anchor in many rural communities and poor metropolitan neighborhoods.
Ortega, a one-time Marxist president of Nicaragua following that country's 1970s leftist revolution against a U.S.-backed dictator, was in Mexico City to strengthen ties with Mexico and also to visit the shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The Nicaraguan president had vowed to visit the shrine if he won election this year, which he did, returning to power 17 years after being voted out of office.
P.S.
It wouldn't take more than five or six calls coming in at once to crash their phone system.
Sounds like a threat to me, is Mexico blackmailing America with veiled threats?
The problem not being confronted is on the south side of the border. Hey Felipe whats the matter? Are things so stinking bad in Mexico that Mexicanos would rather face danger and death to enter the USA illegally??????
Hey Felipe how come your country is so poor??????? You have all kinds of natural resources, and citizens who are willing to do all kinds of work. How come you can’t do a better job and grow your economy???????? Que? Que? Habla English??????? Que lastima, lo ciento Felipe amnesty travesty hippocrit.
“a 10th” more like 20% or more. It would have been the whole country if Kennedy and Bush had one.
It's a "get out of Free-Trrade agreements card" opportunity to tell the USTR to go pi$$ up a rope. And that's hard to do since the Rep is a lady...
Oh...but the USA has pumped billions into Central America. And that will be hard to ween-off
I live in an town with alot of farms and around Harvest Time you see alot of Mexicans in our local stores sending electronic funds to what I can only assume is “back home”. They drive around stuffed into these hoopties (old beat up cars)... I mean the car is full of people. They stare at my daughter. I hate to be prejudiced, but I find them to be menacing at times. On the Eastern Shore (very rural area) of Virginia, they actually busted a brothel run by illegals for illegals. The state of Virginia is being overrun by illegals.
President? Here he would be lucky to be a shift manager at Taco Bell.
You haven't been paying attention! According to CNN, PBS, NY Times, etc.; we are the source of most of the world's ills and it is our duty to correct them - or go broke trying - so we will reach parity with the third world. Then all the world will love and respect us.
Your corrupt gov't is stealing from its own people. Deal with it yourself and take care of your own...How much oil is pumping beneath your country now?
I look forward to you making the same case when South American Illegals who sneak into YOUR country demand citizenship....wait, I forgot...Your gov't throws out illegals from your country after beating them to a bloody pulp.
Hear, hear!!! I worked at a service desk at a major discount department store back in west Denver for a while, and I personally handled literally THOUSANDS of dollars every week that was sent all over Mexico, and Central America (It used to be you could tell me the name of the town, and I could almost always name the state in Mexico it’s in...).
I saw so many Mexican consular ID cards that it boggles the mind! And at the same time, my husband needed two forms of ID (Credit Card, and State Issued Driver’s License to cash HIS LEGAL paychecks at his employer’s bank — oh, and with a thumbprint to boot!)
It made me sick to literally see this money that should’ve been earned by citizens and LEGAL immigrants, as well as being spent HERE flowing out of our country. I could’ve called ICE at least 5 times a day during my shifts while I was a supervisor...
Listen up, Democrats (and Republicans who were supportive of this bill)... If you really want to help the poor and middle class in our nation — stop allowing illegal immigrants to steal their money, and bankrupt our social services.
Yep Mr. Presidente, the tide is turning. We in Texas are tired of footing the bill for your immigrants. Go grow your own economy, we don’t want your masses that’s for damn sure.
Aw c’mon Calde, fix your own country instead of complaining about our Congress (that finally got it right).
Now if we would just enforce the border / immigration laws already on the books ...
Si Si Senior.
Remember the Alamo, and forget about trying to steal back what you lost in a catastrophic war. Your days of running a corrupt government on American export dollars are limited unless Americans become somnolent on this subject.
Why even resurrect a bill that was already dead? What did it accomplish? Did Bush hope it would further fracture the Republican party and thus improve Hillary's chances? Or did he overestimate his ability to whip the senators in line to follow his dictates?
Now we know who the traitors are.
...also has a deep impact on the TransTexasCorridor cartel..
..leaving it in the Texas dust.
I love Texas....and I hate to see good people railroaded.
Leftists like to claim that the words of the Magnificat, "He has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away." are an authorization for Marxist revolution.
In addition, of course, the shrine is a major historic site, regardless of one's religious beliefs.
Hey Calderon, it is a "grave mistake" that your economy is so bad. Why don't you fix your sorry @$$ country so your people will stay there and work?
Really, I am broken by this article.
NOT!

SCREW YOU!!!!!!!!!!
This was a grand example of how our government is SUPPOSED to work!
If you (Calderon), your government and your country didn’t absolutely SUCK so bad.... you wouldn’t have 1/5th of your country’s population living in the US of A illegally..... with thousands more running from under your feet.
Piss off jerk!
