Don’t forget Jim that Obey’s ilk originally justified the idea of resurrecting the “Fairness Doctrine” because they said conservative talk radio had too much influence. Once it was clear that their side was going to lose Obey goes with the majority, justifying his vote by saying that talk radio and it’s headliners DON’T have influence.
What a joke!
They know that nowadays if the fairness doctrine was imposed the ruling party would have the power to decree what is “fair” (look out Alphabets!) not to mention the Dems saw NPR/PBS as being an easy target.
Back when radio was the ONLY way to get information this law made alot of sense. You didn’t want a guy like rockafeller buying every station and then telling people what he wanted them to believe.. it would of been an incredible abuse of power.
That being said.. today it makes no sense. We have free tv with cheap sets. Cable, Satellite, internet, among other sources of information like newspapers.
With so many ways to get other viewpoints it’s just not needed anymore. This tool would simply be used to punish unliked views.

Prior to leaving college to enlist, classes were interrupted constantly by those who professed that “the man” and “no one over age 30” should be never be trusted. Those same punks are currently in positions of power and attempting to enact laws governing every facet of our lives.
Why should I be surprised?!?!?
