Don Young calls measure 'terrorism,' proposes selling forest to Alaska.
The U.S. House of Representatives has limited federal spending on logging roads in the Tongass National Forest... part of the 2008 Interior appropriations bill. It now goes to the Senate.
If the amendment is approved, it would block spending on roads constructed for use by private companies for logging operations.
This is the fourth time that Reps. Steven Chabot, R-Ohio, and Robert Andrews, D-N.J., the measure's co-sponsors, have tried to curb the spending program, which has been described as a federal subsidy for the private logging industry.
"To call them subsidies doesn't make any sense," said George Woodbury, speaking on behalf of the Alaska Forests Association, which represents loggers.
The real subsidy is "the cost of locking up land by the environmental movement,"...
Larry Dunham, a Petersburg-based Tongass National Forest engineering staff officer, said eliminating the road money would affect other projects.
At the end of 2006, the Tongass National Forest had roughly 5,151 miles of road, including well-used public access roads, maintenance roads ...
Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, opposed the amendment, calling it "job-killing" and "economic terrorism."
"Let's be clear about one thing here," Young said. "This amendment is not about fiscal responsibility. It is a giveaway to radical environmental groups who want to treat the Tongass and all of Southeast Alaska as their taxpayer-subsidized playground."
Young said at a hearing Tuesday he would propose a plan to sell the national forest at fair market value to the state of Alaska, which would better manage it.

Dust, not smoke from the Caribou Hills Fire, hung thick along Ninilchik’s Oilwell Road Tuesday evening, stirred by a long line of traffic. With the 55,265-acre fire 61 percent contained, cabin and homeowners who had been evacuated from the area June 21 were finally allowed into the area. Some of them were thrilled by what they found. For others, the news was not so good.

September is a good time to go there to enjoy your favorite outdoor sport.
Somehow we have let the ecofreaks define National Forest as synonymous with National Park. That wasn’t the original intention and we need to take it back. National Forests are run by the Dept. of Agriculture, not the National Park Service. Forests are a resource to be harvested and then replanted.
The liberal eco-nuts are taking jobs in USFS and BLM. They are totally changing the rules : “ Land of Many Uses. “
Now it is land of no use.
It will not happen, but much of this public land should be turned over to the states for direct management or sale to private families.
Roads 200 feet wide should be at least cleared every mile on Fed land. The land should not be kept as Public Access Easements but should be dedicated roads. Any Fed or State public access easements on private land should be either dedicated or vacated.
I would see to this if by some Cosmic Catastrophe I should find myself Pres, and I would also withdraw the USA from the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty and open the Land Office for space mining claims and homesteads.
Then I would go to lunch.

RS 2477 Rights-of-way are important for public access to public lands.
I wouldn’t be concerned with RS2477 timber and mining access so much in this case, but with having a road right-of-way every mile on FedLand, and that the ROW be cleared to reduce fire danger.
I might also, before going to lunch release a statement explaining who the public is. I doubt that few actually know, and outside FedGov nearly nobody knows.
