Six-figure speaker fee for Kofi Annan raises eyebrows at CU ( Raising Tuition next year too )

BOULDER — University of Colorado students paid $160,000 in April to hear former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan say the people of the world must work together to bring about peace.

The amount came as a surprise Wednesday to several members of CU's board of regents, who saw the figure on a routine list of speakers and their fees for the school year that just ended.

Annan was far ahead of the second-highest-paid speaker, liberal historian and activist Howard Zinn, who received $15,500.

The amount for the one-hour speech brought calls from some regents for more frequent audits of student government, which has a $33.8 million annual budget and oversees most campus speaking engagements. It hasn't had a full review in four years, though the student health center has been monitored, campus auditor Jean Stewart told the board.

"It's a large budget, and you have young, inexperienced people (in student government)," Regent Tom Lucero said following the Wednesday meeting. He raised the question of Annan's fee.

Of the $160,000, Annan received $100,000. The rest was for transportation, lodging, food and two security men...

i.e. too much money in the hands of idiots. I wouldn't have paid 16 cents to hear him talk.

I wouldn’t pay $1.60 to listen to this worthless, corrupt, meaningless cipher talk about anything.

He’s a nobody, a nonenity. A glib parasite.

It is so sweet that they are helping out some poor African victim of the greedy capitalists. I know that Kofi will donate the money to help combat malaria and malnutrition back home.

A fool and our money are soon parted, but unfortunately the fool gets to decide who gets it. Hey Colorado! Aren’t you just ever so proud of your University and the taxes you get to pay so they can give your money to someone like Kofi? Well don’t feel too bad, almost all Universities would have done the same thing, to our everlasting shame.

oh come on people. if some approached you and said 100,000 was a fair price to hear you speak for an hour, you’d do it. this lies purely with the students. actually, it’s the faculty.

Once I sent an e-mail to Kofi. I wrote to him that I use the U.N. flag to wipe my boots. No kidding, I really sent it to him. LOL!

Whoever approved Kofi’s entry visa should go to jail. I think we have laws against granting visas to known criminals.

60K for transportation, food, lodging and security for a one hour speech? What numbskull approved that budget? Oh, the same one that decided to give kofi 100K.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

But it’s too bad when it’s someone else’s money. Mom and dad pay most student fees, which means that they were the ones ripped off.

“What? He’s a crook? A famous crook? The corrupt figurehead of an ineffective, Socialist organization? Then, by all means, we must listen to him speak! It’ll help us on the road to success! And make us feel good about ourselves! Pay him whatever he wants! Money is no object!”
