Norway's center-left government unveiled a list of 14 emergency measures they're putting into place immediately, in an effort to keep girls from being sent out of the country for the procedure many describe as barbaric.
The measures come after state television channel NRK broadcast a shocking report last weekend that nearly 200 girls living in Norway have been sent by their own families to Somalia in recent years, to undergo female circumcision.
The practice is illegal in Norway and the country has had a law for years preventing it. Prosecution has been minimal, however, with only a handful of cases brought to court.
Now officials are trying to crack down and enforce the law. That can include preventing girls at risk from leaving the country, if their families are suspected of sending them abroad to be circumcised.
"Skin color and travel destinations wont be enough," Justice Minister Knut Storberget of the Labour Party was quick to point out. "The authorities must have concrete suspicions that circumcision is planned, in order for the family to be denied passports."
Storberget promises, tough, "more binding" cooperation between the police and local township officials. The government will also launch a public information campaign in local taxis and on the local public transport system.
A 24-hour phone line is being set up to take calls from potential victims or members of the public wanting to report cases of suspected circumcision. The number is 02800.
Mandatory genital screenings for girls at risk are proposed, but that must be approved by Parliament, which is currently on summer recess.
“female circumcision” - nice euphemism for genital mutilation... :-(
Hmmm. As much as I despise this practice, I wonder if they would have any problem with parents sending their daughters to Norway to get an abortion if abortion was illegal in their home country? How do they figure they have any say over what parents do with their children in other countries? Like I say, I despise the practice and think it is just one more proof that the religion of peace isn’t. (a religion of peace)
Aren’t most Somali’s in Norway there as ‘refugees?’ If it’s safe enough to send your daughter back home for barbaric elective surgery, why do you still have refugee status?
Simple, really...
Becauses our government is full of imbeciles. And, that is beeing nice to them.
Cheers.
Really? So, the idiots who are in charge are going to have to look between the legs of every little girl? Are they going to use the American TSA “frisk the grannies” program? I have a real problem with this kind of thinking.
Here is what I would do for the Somali Muslims living in Norway:
ONE WAY TICKET HOME.
In the norwegian language aftenposten news section there was a story about a brutal trippel rapist of somali origin that can not be sendt back to Somalia because it would be to dangerous for him. While little somalia girls can be sendt there for summer. It makes me furious
The people of Norway have to ask their leaders, “Is it our problem?”
So what if some animal will be killed by his own people for raping little girls? Somalia is a world away from Norway, both in miles and culture. They have come to your country to drag it down. The British are dealing with another mess this morning, and we Americans are duking it out with our Congress...this PC madness has to stop.
Um, no....Just pointing out something illogical.
