A Pyrrhic Victory (Sour Grapes from Linda Chavez)
Townhall ^ | June 29, 2007 | Linda Chavez

Posted on 06/29/2007 8:46:21 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

Immigration reform is dead. But before conservatives who killed this bill start popping champagne corks, they ought to consider the following.

Our borders will be less secure, not more. Employers who want to do the right thing and only hire legal workers won't have the tools to do so. The 12 million illegal aliens who are here now will continue to live in the shadows, making them less likely to cooperate with law enforcement to report crimes and less likely to pay their full share of taxes. In other words, the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse.

But you won't hear this if you tune in to talk radio over the next few days or read conservative blogs. There will be lots of gloating over having killed "amnesty." There will be claims that senators finally "listened to the people." And, no doubt, some conservatives will be emboldened to consider the next step in their war against illegal immigration, namely to deport those now here illegally.

--snip--

But none of this matters to the radio talk show hosts who encouraged their millions of listeners to shut down the congressional phone system with calls protesting "amnesty." Nor does it matter to the myriad direct mail outfits opposing immigration, which will reap tens of millions of dollars in donations to fatten their coffers as a result of this "victory."

Hey Linda - what we DON’T want is a “comprehensive” bill.

What we DO want is, first, a bill that puts up a fence and seals the border.

Then we want a followup bill, following COMPLETION of the above, that helps employers & law enforcement IDENTIFY illegals and process them accordingly.

THEN we’ll address the need for low wage labor.

There are so many things to say about this one paragraph.....

There is nothing stopping employers from hiring legal American citizens or legal migrants. They just want cheap slave labor and should be prosecuted under current law for hiring illegals.

Our border would be secure under current law if current laws were enforced.

And the idiot who wrote the bills who created this mess is the same idiot who wrote this monstrosity of a bill she's so bitter about not being passed. It isn't the immigration policy that is a failure, it's the administrations who won't enforce it that's the failure.

And when not 12 million but more like 20 million and growing by the day are in the streets marching and standing on corners to be picked up for jobs, tells me they aren't living in any shadow.

Our borders will be less secure, not more.

Thanks to our government who refuses to enforce the laws currently on the books.

Employers who want to do the right thing and only hire legal workers won't have the tools to do so.

I smell BS. This SHAMNESTY was being pushed by businesses who wanted cheap labor and could care less about "doing the right thing".

The 12 million illegal aliens who are here now will continue to live in the shadows, making them less likely to cooperate with law enforcement to report crimes and less likely to pay their full share of taxes.

She must be blind. Those criminal invaders looked "in the shadows" to me with their demonstrations and DEMANDS to stay in this country. And can someone explain to me how illegals who use FORGED documents and steal other identities are paying their "full share of taxes"?

In other words, the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse.

Yes, because people like this woman bellyache and don't want the current laws enforced. They want to give amnesty to lawbreakers who are here and thus encourage MORE lawbreakers to cross our borders, break our laws, harm more of our citizens and steal billions of dollars from our government programs that they have NO RIGHT to have.

And, no doubt, some conservatives will be emboldened to consider the next step in their war against illegal immigration, namely to deport those now here illegally.

This is truly bizarre.

It's like saying: "And, no doubt, some prosecutors will be emboldened to begin prosecuting people who have committed crimes."

IIRC, she was an American at some point.

Now she’s just some hyphenated writer of rants.

So we are supposed to believe that any attempt to enforce current laws hinges on legalizing 20 million illegal aliens?

If anyone missed the NRO crowd bitch-slapping Chavez one after the other , I have to wonder how long she'll still write over there considering she probably doesn't have a single friend at NRO after her crazed denunciations of amnesty opponents.

Uh I think the "crazed" ones are those who state that her opinons were "bitch slapped".

But what the hey it seems the right has been taken over by the gutter ghetto culture, to the enjoymnet of nancy pelosi.

Faulty reporting? What did Lopez say? I don’t recall this incident.

She was the first one to report exit poll numbers from Ohio, and she was totally wrong. Now, this is a minor thing, I just remember being annoyed by it, and, as I said, I hold long political grudges. In fact, I still won't buy Toshiba because of what they did in the 80's.

Agreed. It’s one thing to disagree on an issue. It’s another thing to be called a racist.

She’s toast.

Put those who hire illegals in jail. It’s already on the books and just needs the police and immigration agents to enforce it. Sending a few big time party donors to the slammer will deliver the necessary message.

“LOL! You guys got your opium like emotions off killing the bill, but now have to suffer the withdrawl symptoms of your victory.

Have a nice hangover.”

Hey, it’s one hell of a lot better than 20+ million “instant citizens” AKA Shamnesty....and giving illegals voting rights.

So does tom tancredo, who BTW, has never had a job in the wealth producing private economy in his professional life.
