Immigration Vote: End of a Presidency?
US News & World Report ^ | 6/29/07 | Kenneth Walsh

Posted on 06/30/2007 2:24:57 PM PDT by hardback

The buzz around Washington today is that the proactive phase of the Bush presidency is over.

This analysis was prompted by the 46-to-53 Senate vote Thursday that ended the debate over immigration, most likely for the remainder of George W. Bush's term in office.

"You could make the case that the Bush presidency ended this week," a former White House adviser to Ronald Reagan told U.S. News. He points out that not only did Bush lose his main domestic priority for his second term, but he also faces a revolt within his party over his Iraq policy.

That was driven home when Sens. Richard Lugar of Indiana and George Voinovich of Ohio broke with the administration and said it's time for the United States to start disengaging from Iraq.

Bush aides are trying to persuade the GOP dissidents not to stray too far and to give the president's Iraq policy longer to work. But it's unclear whether those arguments will work.

On immigration, Bush argued Thursday that the American people realize that the status quo is "unacceptable," and he expressed disappointment that his compromise measure failed.

But its loss was caused at least as much by opposition from conservatives as from liberals, and it caused a rift between Bush and his base that may be irreparable. White House officials are trying to shift blame to the Democratic majority in Congress.

Bush advisers say Democratic leaders will now be unable to show any progress on immigration, raising questions about whether they can govern effectively.

Hmm I am suspicious of the freeper name. Isn't raygun the left uses to defer to President Reagan?

To All!

I want to thank all the patriots that put our precious country — and the principles it was founded on — before personalities.

You know who you are.

God bless you!

Do NOT let your guard down!

Continue to be vigilant — as our country is in your hands.

You’re very selective in your list.

And you claim “accomplishments” for things he hasn’t done yet.

You list his singing of pro-gun bills, but you ignore the rampant abuses of the BATF under his watch. They report to him, he has let them (or directed them, take your pick) to do some very clintonesque things.

Armed pilots - signed, but his horrible, horrible pick of norm mineta put up roadblocks to arming pilots. Do you even know what they have to go through in order to be armed?

Keep up your pollyannaish view of his poor domestic record - you’ll find fewer and fewer are buying it.

Since when do we consider these two idiots to be true Republicans?

Not as long as we gave GW the same consideration.

Good, unless he is going to undo free prescription welfare, I do not care to see any more.

Only good he can do now is to prosecute the war and pray a judge or two croaks to get two more in.

I am proud of our President, and I will unashamedly say so, and trust his judgement, especially over yours.

Wow. You really got it together there on your political reasoning.

Can you let me have your car and a couple of rooms in your house, I just want to do work no american will do and need a free place to stay till I can get money saved to send for my family, course I am disabled, but that would be all right. No?

“You got it - Reality is we are at war and he is our CinC (and a d*mn fine one at that). His Presidency is far from over (regardless of MSM wishful thinking). He will continue to make sure we stay on the offensive in this war....dragging the world and half this nation into understanding the threat we face....”

We’re at war?

We got one helluva war footing with six to ten thousand people of unknown origin waltzing across our borders each week. GWB’s has 6+ years to make a dent. He hasn’t.

Go sell silly somewhere else.

I don't believe this will be the case. The ME (because of our actions through the leadership of GWB) will look much different within a decade. The values of freedom, self-worth and of their own style of quasi ME democracy are taking root as we speak.

Dream on. History is written in a decade. Wishing for something doesn't make it true. You are living in a fantasy world.

To suggest GWB would resemble Carter only shows you have an axe of sorts to grind and won't be intellectually honest. GWB inherited a recession (he didn't cause one like JC). GWB has seen 6 straight years of expansion and an economy that is thriving despite the rise in energy costs.

First, presidents don't have a much control over the ecnomy as you posit. They deserve neither most of the credit or most of the blame. Bush's spending and expansion of government, especially the prescription program, may be one of the big steps on the way to bankrupting this country.

Lastly, JC was a man of very little leadership or willingness to make tough decisions. GWB is anything but (agree with him or not).

He took some tough decisions and made the wrong ones. His decision to limit political speech, push the prescription drug program, and ineffectually fight the war in Iraq may be his lasting legacy. Thankfully, we were able to reverse his Harriet Miers appointment and stop his amnesty bill that would have destroyed this country as we know it.

No, history will be very kind to GWB.

That's your opinion, not fact.

HAAA You are so completely clueless!

Remember that it was YOUR crowd that screamed bloody non stop murder about “We got to do something about the Illegals, they are destroying the country” for the last 4 years?

Well guess what clown, the Status Quo on Immigration, which all you claim is “Destroying the country” is now in place for at least 2 more years since no one is going to touch “Immigration until after 2008.
So the ONLY thing you losers managed to do is make sure the VERY crises you are so upset about remains completely unchanged for another 2 years or more.
Talk about ripping off your nose to spite your enemies! It would be funny, because of the absolute stupidity being demonstrated by the Know Nothings on this issue, if the consequences were not so tragic for the future of this country.”

In case you havn’t noticed, the dead immigration bill was amnesty...with a few little sprinkles of “feel good” security measures and loop holes in there as big as the ones between your ears. If that bill was signed into law, it would have kept the “status quo”...and just granted amnesty to 20 million + miscreants.

I guess that’s your idea of “fixing something”?

I am about sick of your cheap Trailer trash references. I have family that live in Mobile home communities in Florida.

Truth is, YOU are a lot trashier than them. They, at least, know how to use the English language to gain friends instead of losing them.

Grow up, you are nothing but a kool aid drinking fool!

Neither one could find his ass with both hands.

A succinct, factually correct assessment of Voinovich and Lugar.

Bush is done, he is cooked and he did it to himself.

Giving up our borders and sovereignty has overshadowed all that he could have accomplished.

Sad thing. He just had to keep to his program. He gave up all he has accomplished in the last two years.

Typical FR response these days. Can’t make an argument so resort to sarcasm. If I were at RNC the party would be on a conservative track.

7.On July 19, 2006, Bush used his veto power for the first time in his presidency to veto

And sadly you think that is a plus for him, first VETO, after he let so much crap cross his desk, including CFR, which you may have forgot he promised to VETO, either you are a paid hack or willingly deluded, in either case your statements are of no important to this thread.
