Sen. Graham to face 'grass-roots' GOP opponent (Grahamnesty has his first GOP Primary opponent)

John J. Cina, a Summerville businessman, has never sought public office before but is starting his political career by setting his sights high. He said Friday he will oppose U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham in next year's Republican primary.

"I'm not a politician. I'm an every- day citizen, an hourly wage earner," Cina said. "We need to consider what's best for the American people, what's best for the South Carolina people. We've sent people up to Washington, D.C., for a purpose, and they don't do anything we want them to."

A self-described "grass-roots right-wing conservative with unwavering principles," Cina most recently has worked as an engineering representative, processing permits for cable TV and telephone companies with Synergetic Design Inc. in Florida and South Carolina.

Cina said he began planning his bid in January and announced his intentions at the Dorchester County Republican Executive Committee meeting. He said he hasn't met Graham but isn't happy with his record.

"Let's put it this way: I don't like the direction the government is going in right now," he said. "Seventy percent of the people don't want this immigration bill passed, yet they are determined to pass this immigration bill. That's only one item."

Congradulations to this guy. The GOP needs to learn a lesson, and Graham looks like a good place to do it.

Hopefully it won’t open a door for democrats. The stupid party hasn’t had a smarts infusion yet, that I have heard of.

Seems like a decent man. I’m not sure politics has room for those.

I’ll check back to his website from time to time and maybe send him a contribution in a few months. It would be nice to see Graham get knocked out in the primary.

re: Hopefully it won’t open a door for democrats.)))

count on it. SCarolinians can hold a grudge, and would vote for a plausibly moderate Democrat. Remember Hollings.

This is a disaster. It could almost have been orchestrated by Graham.

You guys in SC need to find a credible challenger. This guy has no years in the legislature and doesn’t even appear to be a college graduate. He can be a fine guy and complies with constitutional requirements, but he is not the sort of guy that SC Republicans who didn’t care much about immigration would gravitate towards.

Stop this. Find a proper challenger candidate. Someone from the legislature with a history of success in business or law. Have him step forward and then we have a horse race.

You never know. Now two RINO Senators (Hagel and Graham) will be fighting hard just to win their GOP Primary elections next year. As of now, Hagel is in more danger of losing his primary election next year. Hagel's primary opponent is the Attorney General of Nebraska.

I sort of agree here. You need a real challenger for a Senator here. Is this guy a neophyte? What about your Congressmen, State Office holders, State Legislature Officers, Gazillionaires, etc. . . .
