Off topic, and probably beaten to death... I apologize for asking (again, most likely), but what was the problem with merlot in the movie Sideways?
In the 80s and early 90s, merlot became the hot wine. As a result, a lot of crap wine got labeled merlot and it all got a bad reputation. The funny part is that as a result of "Sideways", winemakers can hardly give away merlot, and there are some great deals to be found on some really excellent examples. TJ's was selling one for $15 a bottle that was originally intended to sell for over $30. They seem to have gone through it now, though. I haven't seen it the last few times I've been there.
The other effect of "Sideways" is that pinot noir is the hot wine, and, just like happened with merlot, a lot of crap wine is coming out with that on the label.
