GRAHAM Men and women who stood outside the courthouse in Graham on Saturday to protest illegal immigration got thumbs-up signs and honks from some who drove by.
Others drivers slowed down as they circled the courthouse and leaned out their windows to make comments in Spanish.
Between 15 and 20 people were stationed outside the courthouse late Saturday morning to hold up signs for people to see from each side of Court Square.
Protest organizer Kim Oliver said some arrived a little before 7 a.m. and planned to stay most of the day. Others were participating for part of the day.
Oliver said the government needs to do two things: prevent people from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally and fine employers who hire illegal immigrants.
Let our law enforcement enforce the law, he said.
Oliver said he has no problem with legal immigration.
Oliver, owner of O&S Concrete, has been self-employed since 1997. He said the labor force created by illegal immigration is producing the same results as the shift of jobs from the United States to other countries.
Its all about cheap labor and depressing our wages, he said.
Alice Dodson of Elon also said she opposes the two methods of achieving lower labor costs.
I dont like either, she said.
Im tired of seeing our benefits go downhill because theyre willing to work for less, said Chad Ward of Altamahaw.
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Doles position in the federal debate over illegal immigration impressed some who were there Saturday.
Dole, one of two Republicans representing North Carolina in the Senate, has opposed amnesty for illegal immigrants, while saying the government should enforce immigration laws and focus on border security.
Im very impressed with Mrs. Dole, said Ron Basden of Burlington.
Political observers believe a Senate vote last week killed the possibility of federal immigration reform until after the 2008 elections.
Oliver said he had a similar protest three weeks ago, and plans to have others.
Were going to protest for as long as it takes, if it takes every Saturday, he said.
Demand a border fence! Build it NOW!! Beef up the border patrol and close our borders!

I dont speak Spanish so I would hardly understand insults thrown at me by people that do,but I do know the Universal sign for illegals and those who would advance the cause of illegals. It is a Raised fist with the middle finger pointing straight up. Its called the Bird and everyone understands it.
Wife just sent me this email:
Telephone poll
The latest telephone poll taken by the Florida Governor’s office, asked whether people who live in Florida think illegal immigration is a serious problem:
19% of respondents answered: “Yes, it is a serious problem.”
81% of respondents answered: “No es una problema seriosa.”
Maybe... or maybe not.
"On the Plains of Hesitation lie the blackened bones of countless millions, who, at the dawn of victory sat down to rest, and resting, died."
In other words, it ain't over 'til it's over - and it ain't over YET. Thank those who did the right thing, continue to watch carefully those who swung to and fro like a weathervane - and hound those who voted for amnesty until they wish they'd never heard of Mexico.
In observing the anniversary of our nation's independence, it is especially fitting that we remember Jefferson's words. Eternal vigilance is, indeed, the price of Freedom.
As was I, particularly tough for her being the Senate Campaign Chair and buck the Pretender-in-Chief.
Can somebody make this in Spanish, then?
I am in CT, where there are supposed to be tons of illegals, yet everytime I or a neighbor have their lawns done, the workers are all white. Should I tell them that Linda Chavez says they don’t really want to do such work?
Foolish nation.
Illegal Aliens:
GTFOOMC!
True many will be at risk. But the odds are not good against it not happening.
Do not dispair. The border will be secured one day. Sadly, I fear it will be after we see some very terrible acts inflicted upon our nation. Then the rush to secure the border will be intense. Of course, it will have been too late for many.
Foolish nation.
You are right. Have you told the WH lately?
I tried to get through on the phone but for some reason I kept getting a recording, "We're sorry, all networks are busy now. Please try your call again later."
Do you think others were trying to call at the same time I was?
They are lawbreakers to begin with, so their anger will boil over into acts of violence and vandalism, because they will not get what they want. They wont be deported, but they also will not get the full amnesty they want.
This is going to become a major social problem of French Violence propotions for the United States. The average Joe still does not see it coming IMHO. He will be surprised and quite angered when it does materialize.
They might want to think about saving that gas money for their future trip south cause I dont see the American Citizens letting go of this thing. The illegals are not going to like it but this nation is waking up and will accept no more bs from the illegals.
It will be mexico or jail.
Not for very damn long. As soon as the average American Citizen sees cars burning in their own neighborhoods the phobia they have for militias will vanish.
