Americans flock to Mexico for dentistry
Washington Post ^ | 07/02/07 | Manuel Roig-Franzia

---snip--- Americans travel to Mexico for stomach surgery, eye exams and routine checkups. But it is the dentistas - thousands strung along the border - who are in the vanguard in attracting U.S. health consumers.

Mexican dentists often charge one-fifth to one-fourth of those north of the border. Their operating costs are substantially lower, and because the Mexican legal system makes it almost impossible to sue them, they don't have to worry about high malpractice premiums.

I expect most of those are “undocumented” Americans ... although I suppose there are some citizens willing to take a chance on a Mexican dentist to save $50.

OMG! Who in their right mind would go across the board and use a Mexican dentist. We don’t need no stinking disinfectant.

This is too funny.

Please name three flockers who pay mega bucks to travel to another country to save peanuts to have their teeth drilled by untouchable foriegn dentists.

LOL! Wackos!

Actually, they may have found the cure to our supposed "health care crisis"

I was a Customs Inspector on the Mexican Border years ago. Back then, I saw a lot of Americans going to Mexico for medical treatments that either weren’t approved in the U. S. I recall a laetrile clinic for cancer patients that used to bring busloads across the border.

Americans were also going to Mexican Pharmacies for bargains on prescriptions.

It doesn’t surprise me that Americans are going there for dentistry. Even with dental insurance my husband and I are still leaving dental work undone because of the high co-pays.

Actually they do. And have been for a very long time. Especially people getting lots of work done. Dentistry is hideously expensive in the US, even if you have good insurance getting multiple crowns or bridges done in the US can cost thousands out of pocket. Add to that the fact that most dentists in the US don’t seem to believe in getting the patient in quick doing the work they request and moving on, instead preferring thorough examinations and giving you a laundry list of problems (which is probably the right thing to do medically, but when a person has a bad tooth they don’t want to talk to the doctor other teeth they just want to deal with the bad tooth), and you’ve got yourself a situation where many people are going to seek alternatives.
