I’m in complete agreement with this. From my young point of view one of the most damaging things to change in the US in the last 40 years was the attitude of having pillars of history. Now all we hear about is how un-politically correct our ancestors were.
I need to start celebrating memorial day right too.
This isn't exactly the same thing, but every 4th of July we gather at my uncle's rural property. Everyone brings food, and my uncle or someone else often reads something like the essay (don't know who wrote it but it's probably familiar) about the personal price paid by all the signers of the Declaration of Independence. A couple of years ago, my husband bought flags and found out about the military history of all the gentlemen present, and read their names out and mentioned their service records, and thanked them, and gave each a flag.
I suggest that EVERYONE read and understand the simple, brief language of the Declaration of Independence, and consider it in the context of what we current;y suffer from our government overlords:
When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. This is a WONDERFUL idea. I actually DO read certain things to my kids before the 4th. But it would be great if we could have such a thing: they would never be standard, because even the Jewish Passover Haggadot are not standard. There are long, drawn out Orthodox ones with nothing left out that make a seder last for hours and hours. There are liberal feminist ones. There are short and sweet ones. We have some in our house that are great for kids, with cute songs to sing, etc.
The only thing is, there are of course so many Americans who really just want to get the party on and forget at all why we celebrate. They wouldn’t buy the book or even take a free one from Folger’s Coffee.
We won't all have to read from the exact same "Haggadah", but the text can simply be a brief recounting of the history of the colonial period, culminating in the Declaration of Independence, whose entire text should be recited and discussed by the family at the dinner table. It could include a few prayers for liberty and for those who have fought and still fight for it around the world.

2 In reading the reply here it strikes me that we do have a national ritual..an American Haggadah. Not an official one, but one in keeping with the individualism that’s ingrained in our souls.

I was at a celebration the other day where the Declaration of Independence was read. It was very moving. And we ate picnic food together. It was almost a “bonding” experience. It reminded me of what old fashioned 4th of July celebrations are supposed to be like.
