A Pyrrhic victory?
The Washington Times ^ | 7-3-07 | Linda Chavez

Immigration reform is dead. But before conservatives who killed this bill start popping champagne corks, they should consider the following.

Our borders will be less secure, not more. Employers who want to do the right thing and only hire legal workers won't have the tools to do so. The 12 million illegal aliens here now will continue to live in the shadows, making them less likely to cooperate with law enforcement to report crimes and less likely to pay their full share of taxes. In other words, the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse.

But you won't hear this if you tune in to talk radio over the next few days or read conservative blogs. There will be lots of gloating over having killed "amnesty." There will be claims that senators finally "listened to the people." And, no doubt, some conservatives will be emboldened to consider the next step in their war against illegal immigration, namely to deport those now here illegally.

What you won't hear is that liberals are just as relieved that this bill didn't pass as conservatives — and they know time is on their side. Their plan is to wait until January 2009, when they expect bigger Democratic majorities in the House and Senate and a Democrat in the White House, and then reintroduce immigration legislation. They know the present laws can't be enforced, not because of lack of will but because the laws are inadequate and contradictory.

Our borders will be less secure, not more.

Shut up, Linda. The Bush Admin has money and authorization to build over 300 miles of fencing. Now. Without the defeated bill.

They've built 13. So why would we think they would use any other new enforcment provisions effectively?

Our borders will be less secure, not more.

And the reason that they were insecure in the first place was because the Federales in Washington willingly chose not to enforce the immigration laws on the books. The amnesty bill that died not once, but twice, consisted of increased entitlements and rewards for breaking the law and a series of empty promises.

It's not those who want to do the right thing that we have to worry about.

QUISLING: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.

U.S. Constitution, Article 4 Section 4:

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,

and shall protect each of them against Invasion;"

Invasion: \In*va"sion\, n. [L. invasio: cf. F. invasion. See Invade.] [1913 Webster]

1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.

An un-indicted co-conspirator of the Mexican Invasion is whining and sniveling. Oh, dear.

I got an idea! Why don’t the sponsors propose the legislation a piece at a time, starting with border security, and let each item stand or fall on its own merit?
And why don't they make sure the Congresscritters, their staffs, and the people have time read and evaluate the legislation?

Neah. Makes too much sense. Besides the loot might not go the right people.

There is going to be whining and gnashing-of-teeth when the rats lose on the first tuesday of Nov 2008.

No one can possibly know if present immigration laws will get the job done or not because they have never been enforced.
If we had a Secretary of Homeland Security that enforced the law instead of thinking up excuses why it can't be done there is no doubt the situation would improve.

As far as illegals being in the shadows - is this what she means?

Hey, Yanqee!

So this article is saying it’s all the FAULT of those of us who screamed the loudest about the bill and with power we still have are the cause of illegal aliens roaming inside our borders. Get real.

The problem with a "war against illegal immigration" is...?
And the reason not to "deport those now here illegally" would be....?

Step away from the keyboard and stuff a sock in your cake-hole, Linda.

B.S.!!! Conservatives aren't finished with this yet Ms Chavez. We don't intend to stand down until our border is secure, the fence is built and the flow of illegals from Mexico into the US is stopped. We also intend to force the feds to enforce the laws currently on the books and to deport all illegals that come in contact with the system...immediately.

The woman sounds like a liberal. Can you believe her? How dare she say we created this mess. Is she loopy?

Look, Linda, it’s really easy. Build the fence, deport all of the illegals including anchor babies.
