Thanks! I should have known better. The stuff in Darfur and Rwanda is much the same I believe (blamed on drought, but caused by war, tribalism, whatever).
I was in Irian Jaya (Indonesian part of New Guinea) and the gov’t couldn’t figure out why the farms weren’t doing well. First - about the only thing that would grow in those soils were sweet potatoes (the staple of the local tribes). Plus, the “farmers” were folks that the gov’t had grabbed out of their overcrowded cities and “transmigrated” them off to Irian Jaya!
