Nothing in the constitution says that once a state joins the union it is forever bound to remain in it.
All Lincoln proved was that we were not really as free as we thought we were. The idea that America was a country where free will and self-determination ruled supreme was quashed by his presidency. The spirit of what America was supposed to be died in 1861.
