Kenya: Priest Wants Centres for Abortion Seekers (CRISIS PREGNANCY)

A Catholic priest has proposed that crisis centres be put up countrywide to help women seeking abortions.

Fr Pascal Mwambi's recommendation comes amid emotive debate on whether or not women with unwanted pregnancies should be allowed to terminate them.

The priest from Holy Ghost Cathedral, Mombasa, also called on the electorate to vote out leaders who supported abortion.

A mock tribunal was convened in Nairobi last Tuesday where the issue was discussed, with organisers saying abortion was a woman's right and she should be free to choose whether or not to keep a pregnancy.

Easy solution

Health assistant minister Enoch Kibunguchy called for sobriety in the debate, saying sexually abused women should be allowed to procure abortion.

The assistant minister said nuns and girls impregnated by priests had gone to him after botched abortions.

The Catholic Church holds that abortion is not only illegal, but also immoral.

"The word abortion stands on its own as murderous whether we add the adjective legal/illegal or clandestine/non-clandestine," Fr Mwambi said.

He said abortion may seem an easy solution but had severe consequences. He noted that several traumatised women had gone to priests to confess and repent for procuring abortions and continue to live with the guilt. "If priests or religious leaders could tell all about the repentant abortionists or women involved, we could realise that they feel guilty. But we are bound by the professional seal of confession on such matters," said the priest.

"The women have unhealed wounded hearts. Who knows if they will ever get another child of their own? When the law already exists in favour of an evil such as abortion, what we need to do is to try and vote for a lesser evil one if we can not do away with it completely. When politicians vote in Parliament, they not only need to listen to the voices of their supporters but also to their inner voice," Fr Mwambi said.

"I commit a sin even when I am in a position to stop it but I do not make an effort at all. If I advise somebody to procure an abortion, I commit a sin, even when I support the person financially or even vote for a law in favour of it," he stated.

Many women with unwanted pregnancies have a lot of bitterness, he said, adding contributory factors such as rape, incest and failed contraceptives were sensitive and needed special attention.

He said the Church was ready to counsel those who had procured abortions.

Poor title...sure is (but that’s what is listed in the original article).

To the Religion Mod, can you please insert a (CRISIS PREGNANCY) into the title, so that it is a bit clearer?

Tnx
