The text of a "Motu Proprio" (papal decision) regarding the revival of a controversial Latin mass will be made public this week, The Jerusalem Post has learned. Vatican officials stressed that the current text, which formerly called Jews "perfidious," contains no derogatory reference to Jews.
The text is based on the Tridentine Mass promulgated by the Council of Trent in the 16th century. Originally this mass contained a Good Friday prayer for the conversion of "the perfidious Jews."
But in the 1960s, after his historic meeting with the historian and Holocaust survivor Jules Isaac, Pope John XXIII ordered this terminology removed, and the version that will be used dates back to 1962, when this phrase had already been eliminated.
Yet controversy continues over Benedict XVIth's decision to "facilitate and clarify" the possibility of performing mass in this Latin version. After the Second Vatican Council, the Latin mass was abolished in favor of using local languages, for the sake of improved communication. Only 2,000 to 3,000 people, following Cardinal Lefebvre in France and in Italy's Piedmont region continued using the Latin version. They ordained their own bishops, who were subsequently excommunicated by John Paul II. Benedict is apparently attempting to reintegrate this group into the church.
Now, any parish with at least 30 members will be able to request permission from their bishop to perform the Latin mass.
Some Catholic circles, particularly those most open to interfaith dialogue, are concerned this change will divide Catholics and undo some of the good work of the Second Vatican Council.
Jewish groups are upset that the mass contain a prayer for the conversion of the Jews.
While the Tridentine Mass contained a Good Friday prayer asking that God "lift the veil covering the hearts of Jews so that they may recognize Jesus Christ our Lord," the 1965 version states: "Let us pray for the Jews, that the face of the Lord our God may shine on them so that they too recognize the redeemer of all, Jesus Christ, our Lord."
The prayer continues: "Listen to your church so that those who were once your chosen people may reach the fulfillment of redemption."
Contemporary Good Friday prayers no longer ask for the conversion of Jews, and in contrast to the old version, the Jewish covenant with God is presented as eternally valid.
During Easter celebrations one can hear these words in the modern version: "Lord our God, who chose the Jews before all other men, to receive his word, help them to continue progressing in the love of your name and faithfulness to your covenant." The prayer continues with wishes that Jews may reach "the fulfillment of redemption."
it’s the Good Friday liturgy* only - when we kneel during the prayers of the faithful. I am sure we still pray for the conversion of the Jews at the novus ordo Good Friday liturgies.

Try it again at one of the Tridentine Rite masses that will no doubt soon be celebrated - many priests were as disgusted as you were with the geetars and kissing and hugging, and have been waiting for years for this day. And many young priests who have only seen it in videos or occasional celebrations by Tridentine Rite groups are busy learning it right now!
I agree with your feelings entirely; you were far from the only person to leave the Church over that. I think the removal of the Old Mass somehow, in fact, was one of the things responsible for the collapse of Western civilization in the 1960s.

I don’t think it was “Vatican II” that did the damage but rather those wishing to champion sin instead of obedience who misdirected the changes of Vatican II. From my limited understanding, it was Vatican II that brought great conversion.

You are correct.But articles like this are written in a way to be negative about the daily Latin mass.The Jews are prayed for on one day.The word perfidious is not used.
There is much ignorance about the old Latin mass on the internet.This allows trouble-makers to do thier negative work.
The Novus Ordo mass gives the priest a lot of control over the mass and the congregation. The fact that there are few barriers to his creation and tailoring of his own personal style “liturgy,” combined with the watered down doctrinal content of the text even without any pastoral additions, means that he can insert whatever he wants in it and the congregation really has to go along with it.
In the Tridentine Rite, the Mass is in charge, so to speak. The Church is in charge, and all of its doctrine, unchanged and unchangeable, is there for all to see. There’s no wiggle room.
The thing that would be “divisive” to these people is if the faithful suddenly had a chance to see what Father Bob and Sister Snowflake have been substituting for the truth all these years.

Well I am upset that their Talmud calls Mary a filthy whore and Christ a bastard. I think they should change that!
The only thing I can figure is that the liberal news media HATES the Catholic Church, because it represents one of the very last bulwarks against wide open licentious secularism, abortion on demand, government-as-religion, and the destruction of individual rights.
The evangelicals are not as easy a target because they are not centralized, but make no mistake, if the Catholics fall they will be next. The mop-up operations will probably include observant Jews.

No kidding! I have no objection to them praying for my conversion. I would certainly prefer that.

Very true. One of the guiding lights of V II was a young Joseph Ratzinger, who now as B XVI is undoing the excesses committed in its name.
I think Pope John Paul II was another guiding light as he was one of the clergy who actually read what was written in Vatican II instead of using misdirection to sell souls to sin.
The author should have at least capitalized the word “Mass”.

I fully agree. The Novus has somewhere around 20 or 30,000 versions out there around the world and you never know what you're gonna get. The TLM has one version.
A true freedom exists in a liturgy that is defined (TLM). The human spirit can transcend knowing where it begins and ends in the liturgy without some innovation and distraction embodied in the NO mass and philosophy.
