Salt Lake City police this afternoon shot and killed a desperate armed robbery suspect who was holding a Green Street resident hostage.
The man, armed with handgun, had tried to steal a car from a husband and wife near 650 S. Park St., but he fled when the husband got out of the car and scuffled with him, police said.
He ran to nearby Green Street and was spotted around 12:15 p.m. near 672 S. Green St. The man ran into the house, where he took a man and a woman hostage.
The male hostage was able to escape, but the suspect held onto the woman, a gun to her head as he shouted to police around 1:20 p.m. that he would not go back to prison and would not be taken alive.
At that point an officer, apparently armed with a rifle, shot and killed the man as he stood with the hostage in the front doorway.
A neighbor who lives nearby first reported the suspicious man.
The witness, who asked that he not be identified, said he was inside his house and saw the man looking around his front porch, like he was "stalking someone." The man crouched down and the witness saw he had a chrome handgun.
The neighbor said he called police and watched as the gunman went to 672 S. Green St. He said the hostages were the woman who lives there and her boyfriend.
Jayme Chilbert said she moved in across the street from the crime scene a week ago.
She said she heard police yell to the gunman, "Drop the weapon. Release the hostage."
Next, Chilbert said, she heard one shot, then quiet.

I like the one command to put the gun down then the take down. No need to repeat the order.
“I like the one command to put the gun down then the take down. No need to repeat the order”
One command, one kill.
Have a great weekend!
“He got his wish, and he saved the tax payers a lot of money!”
Yep.....whole lotta money : )
It's too bad we can't do that to all felons. Just think how much money we would save. :o)
That’s vigilantism and that’s wrong, because people have rights, even those that take women and children as hostages.
/s
Why doesn’t the first sentence read, “Police allegedly gun down alleged hostage taker in Salt Lake”?
Journalistic “ethics”? [sarcastic snicker]
Good shootin’ Tex!
California has around 700 inmates on"Death Row". Many have been there 20 years...
It’s too bad we can’t do that to all felons..................In this day and age becoming a convicted felon is not that hard to do, a simple home made explosive device we made as kids can now lead to a felony conviction or maybe even pointing your finger at a cop during an argument about feeding pidgeons.
Hmm, Trolly Square area, again...
Cool. One less convicted sex offender to keep track of. SLPD has been doing a great job of cleaning the gene pool in spite of Rocky.
We have the government local, state and federal that we elect. Any day that we want to change it all we have to do is get off our dead asses and do it.
When was the last time that you made an appointment to go and talk informally with your mayor and police chief, jointly or separately. Both of those men work for you and I have yet to know one who won’t give you 15 minutes.
I have learned over the years that it is best to go to their offices with questions instead of demands. Be sure to have some suggestions prepared or else you may be invited back to discuss those when you organize them.
I will bet my left arm that the sound the bullet made when it connected with the dudes skull is a sound the hostage will forever recognize, in a milisecond or less.
Even 20% of them : )
“...and would not be taken alive”
And he got his wish.
