An Underwater Fence to Stop Invasive Species
Washington Post ^ | July 9, 2007 | Kari Lydersen

A century ago, engineers blasted the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal out of limestone to reverse the Chicago River, an unprecedented engineering feat that linked Lake Michigan with the Mississippi River.

The project served its purpose, sucking water from the lake to flush out the growing city's waste, but there was an unintended consequence: It created a pathway between two previously distinct ecosystems and a route for invasive species traveling in both directions. Until recent years, though, heavy pollution in the canal prevented fish from swimming through it.

Did anyone see and/or post this already??? We can build a fence to keep out a CARP but cannot build a fence to keep out illegal aliens/drug runners and other criminals?????

This story is obviously false. There is NO way we could build a fence. The goats would jump right over it. Maybe a virtual one, but only enough to cover about 2 percent of the opening.

See, pollution can be a good thing, when wisely applied.

From what I hear locally, the fence they are constructing is an underwater electric fence that zaps the fish as they try to swim past the barrier. There is one there already, but it is old and needs updating. Obviously you can’t swim there or you would be zapped too.

I was thinking we could create a decent stretch of the border with a spanning landfill. Maybe some o them would root through the trash and take some back to Mehico

Well, obviously. If you're a north sider they don't want you disturbing the south side ecosystem, and vice versa.

I mean, Cub Fans mating with Sox fans. Think of the horrible mutants!
