When it comes to the GOP presidential race, I am decidedly undecided. As a philosophical libertarian and longtime fan of the congressman, Im rooting for Ron Paul. However, Im realistic enough to know that lightning would have to strike not once, not twice, but probably in the neighborhood of five times before hed have a real shot at the nomination.
Like many conservatives, I have reservations about the remaining field of candidates for one reason or another, which is why Im intrigued and open to learning more about Fred Thompson. And what Ive learned so far is that some people are so scared to death of the man that theyll resort to anything to derail his potential candidacy.
Just last week the Los Angeles Times ran a BS story about how Thompson supposedly lobbied for an abortion group some 15 years ago - an accusation denied by Thompson - in an effort to undermine his support among social conservatives. The charge was so thin and ultimately meaningless - Thompson had a stellar pro-life record during his time in the Senate - that its hard to see how the Times justified the ink needed to print it.
That slop was followed on Monday by a lengthy New York Times story attempting to slime Thompson for having a trophy wife, musing in the headline whether or not Jeri Thompson would be an albatross around the neck of the former senators expected presidential campaign.
At 40 years of age, Mrs. Thompson is indeed much younger than Mr. Thompson - and is quite attractive, to boot. But as the Times graciously acknowledged, Jeri is no blonde bimbo when it comes to politics. Indeed, she was once the spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. Nor, again as the Times acknowledged, is she a home-wrecker, having married Sen. Thompson some two decades after his divorce from his first wife.
On the other hand, the Times managed to note that former congressman-turned-talk-show-host Joe Scarborough recently compared Mrs. Thompson to a stripper, and was able to find a political scientist named Karen OConnor who states that Jeri Thompson will hurt the candidate with Republican women. I think women have an innate ick reaction when they see a wife so much younger and vital than her husband, OConnor is quoted as saying.
This resulted in the following online comment in the Houston Chronicle from skullcrusherjones: I like how having a young wife hurts him with Republican women. Just goes to show that no one hates women more than other women. Which probably isnt a good sign for Hillary.
Seriously, if this is the best the opposition can come up with - a flimsy connection to a denied lobbying gig and the ick factor - then Thompsons gotta be feeling pretty darned good about his chances right about now
I don’t trust lawyers.
While I think there may be a negative factor here, I don't think "ick" is quite accurate. Probably has more to do with insecurity about their own advancing years. Expression would be more along the lines of a "sigh" or rolling of the eyes -- not an "ick".
"Ick" is more accurate to describe the situation in which a very young woman (20ish) is hit on by a 40+ year old non-wealthy man. Which is different from the Fred situation.
If true conservatives are not lining up behind Fred Thompson, what does that tell you? That they are scared that he will win? Or that they are scared of what may happen should he win?
I’m a true conservative. Don’t I count?
As soon as Fred announces, I’ll be working on bundling a million dollars for him. Does that indicate my faith in his conservatism? I’m not alone, as the FR poll will show you.
I’m a true conservative.

If you would like to be on this list be warned, this ping list is EXTREMELY active.
I’m a libertarian, and I plan to vote for F. Thompson. I’d only switch to Ron Paul if I ever find that he’s running second or better in the polls—which is extremely unlikely, as the author admits.
United we stand. Divided we fall.
I don’t trust libertarians.

Prove it.
That’s a big IF, toots.
Huge.
The Democratic establishment and their media allies are afraid of him. The nasty and petty attacks him from both quarters proves that.
I think his reasoning would go something like:
True Conservatives(tm) wouldn't support Fred Thompson, therefore if you support Fred Thompson you are not a True Conservative(tm), therefore there are no True Conservatives(tm) supporting Fred Thompson.
AHA! ;)
George Bush represents the Teddy Kennedy wing of the Republican Party. Thompson doesn’t. GEOGRAPHY is becoming very important in my support of a political candidate for President. Bush was elite Ivy League Rockefeller Republican all the way, the only thing his time in Texas did, was to give the boy a mother’s love for a Spanish speaking nanny and therefore a perverse commitment for something called amnesty. Guilani and Romney are political tap dancers in the NY and Massachusetts tradition. I will take my chances as Jimmie Rogers sang with T for Tennessee.
I am simply saying that a true conservative would want to back a true conservative. I do not consider FDT a true conservative. Sorry.
