He's Got Rick Davis Eyes [new McCain manager]
The Hotline ^ | July 10, 2007 | Amy Dudley

Posted on 07/10/2007 9:15:29 PM PDT by Norman Bates

John McCain's campaign released a late afternoon statement from newly appointed campaign manager Rick Davis. Davis: "This campaign has always been about John McCain and his vision for reducing federal spending, defending traditional values, and winning the war against Islamic extremists. Today we are moving forward with John's optimistic vision for our country's future."

In the wake of the inside the beltway campaign shakeup at McCain HQ, plans are still set to travel to Concord, NH this Friday (the 13th, of all days) for an address on "Iraq and the War Against Islamic Extremism." Campaign spokesperson Danny Diaz expressed confidence that today's shakeup will not affect outside the beltway voters. Diaz: "Senator McCain is the most prepared and best equipped candidate to move the country forward. He will continue to address the important issues confronting the American people and lay out a plan for keeping America safe and prosperous."

I think this shake-up was inevitable and will ultimately turn out to be the turning point for McCain's campaign. The fact is his campaign has been dormant - overspending and overstaffed with too many ex-Bush holdovers.

Rick Davis ran McCain's "maverick" 2000 campaign. Now he will run this campaign.

I don’t think there’s going to be any revival of McCain’s dying campaign......

1) the MSM loved him in 2000 as the anti-Republican, but now with his staunch support of the Iraq War (for which he should be applauded) the NY Times and the rest of the ENEMEDIA would never allow him the same kind of glowing coverage he received before.

2) after the fiascos of the ludicrous immigration bill and the appalling campaign finance bill, there’s no way he’ll ever recover much ground with conservatives.

No, he may edge above 10% again, but he’ll never be a front-running type of candidate again.......

"This campaign has always been about John McCain and his vision for reducing federal spending, defending traditional values, and winning the war against Islamic extremists. Has it died? Or is that wishful thinking? He has fairly consistently been getting 15-18% in the polls even after several forecasts of its impending death.

McCain’s campaign has now re-begun on July 10. The fiscal footprint of the campaign on their bank account will be vastly reduced (he was overspending and overstaffed with expensive ex-Bush veterans).

As far as fundraising, if McCain was dead at $11.3 mil and 72,000 donors, then Romney must not be far behind at $14 mil and 80,000 donors (incidentally, I don’t believe either to be the case).

McCain can win this actually.

McCain is more liberal than many Dems

Name one current Dem national office holder who is more liberal than McCain as a whole. (Hint: McCain's ACU rating is a very respectable 82, just 4 pts behind Fred Thompson.)

A history of the recent nomination process:

1976 - FORD vs. Reagan

1980 - REAGAN vs. Bush

1988 - BUSH vs. Dole

1996 - DOLE (acclamation)

2000 - BUSH vs. McCain

2008 - McCAIN (?)

Perhaps he won't win the nomination, but it's hard to believe the most qualified Republican candidate can't win the nomination.

How on earth is an open-borders pro-amnesty guy the best Republican candidate? McCain will not be the nominee.

You’re right . The only problem is that McPain isn’t a real Republican .
CFR , Kennedy/McPain Amnesty , various anti-gun endeavors , anti-terrorist torture ,normalizing trade with the Viet commies while we still have MIA’s .... no way McPain is a Republican, much less a Conservative ...

How?

Because he is the best qualified with the longest, most consistent record of general conservatism.

Rudy is an 8-year liberal mayor.

Mitt is a one-term governor and olympic organizer with a liberal past.

Fred is an 8-year senator with an undistinguished record.

McCain has served his country in uniform (for 22 years), unlike those candidates. He has also served in the House (4 years) and Senate (20 years) in leadership positions. His track record goes far before those candidates held office, and has been a consistent and middle of the road conservative. He is the best choice in my view.

open-borders pro-amnesty guy

That by the way is a canard. McCain voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, and has consistently been opposed to amnesty. While he may favor a pathway to citizenship, his path would be strict.

McCain has campaigned for more Republican candidates than almost any current GOP national office holder (excepting Bush and Cheney). His lifetime ACU rating is 83, identical to Ron Paul’s (without his isolationist streak), and less than 4 pts behind Fred Thompson. You will hardly find a more staunch supporter of our troops than in John McCain.

CFR - Principled but perhaps wrong. Is that a deal-breaker for Thompson BTW?

Kennedy-McCain - No such bill passed. And McCain is staunchly opposed to amnesty (see above post).

Anti-gun - Nope.

Anti-torture - He’s damned well earned the right to share his opinion.

normalizing trade with the Viet - The President did that.

MIA’s - He’s damned well earned the right to share his opinion.

If I am not mistaken, Project Vote Smart has him pegged to the right of Rudy, Mitt, and Fred and in the same area as Hunter, which is Moderate Conservative. McCain’s record speaks for itself - it is a record in Congress that goes back to when Ronald Reagan was president, Rudy was a prosecutor, Mitt was (apparently) a democrat (?), and Fred was a lobbyist. McCain’s record is all a matter of record and it is one of conservative principles.

Col. Bud Day, the most decorated living U.S. servicemember, would vehemently disagree with your crass, ugly characterization.
