What Iranians Really Think

Keen observers of Iran have insisted for years that the Iranian people are pro-Western, indeed pro-American, while opposed to the largely unelected clerical regime that rules them. For the first time, Terror Free Tomorrow's unprecedented nationwide poll of Iran offers indisputable empirical proof that these commentators are dead-on in their assessment of the "Iranian street."

Discontent with the current system of government, the economy and isolation from the West is widespread throughout Iran. In this context, nuclear weapons are the lowest priority for the Iranian people. The overwhelming popular will to live in a country open to the West and ...

“WHEN” we lose an entire city to an Islamo nuke and in turn let loose the hounds of hell on Iran, I wonder how many Iranians will be left to be pro American.

Well this gives the lie to the Dims view of the world that the Arab world hates b/c of GWB’s war in Iraq.

The only ones that hate us in Arab-land are the terrorists.

You think our “leaders” have the balls to “let loose the hounds of hell”? Or any meaningful counterattack?
I think we have little more then Olmerts in office now.

I have said it for decades, I say it now and I will say for years to come...

The Islamic Regime indeed has a supportative base (as does every regime), certainly counting several millions,
but the vast majority of Iranians, the students, the ethno-linguistic “minorities”, the middle-class and the intelligentsia are clear-cut anti-regime and have a strong pro-western tendency.
I can testify to that personally, knowing scores of Iranians (of different political stances, from Monarchist, Republicanist to Leftists) for decades.

Like the Soviet Union or any other totalitarian system the Islamic Regime maintains itself by repression, opression, secret police and brute force.

Whether there is the will or the capability in Iran for an internal overthrow is another question. But we, the United States and Israel have an own vital interest in a regime change. If there is no possibility of internal revolution, we have to stop the strategic and WMD ambitions militarily first and create a post-regime order in Iran together with the Iranian people.

Right on. But matter of factly Iran is not Arab. They are Islamic but ethnically Persian, Kurd, Azeri (Turkish),with just 5% Arabs at the border to Iraq. Arabs and Persians (Iranians) are arch-enemies since more than thousand years.

The aggravating devil is in the details. Iran is terribly like Japan was before World War II. To the typical Iranian today, and the typical Japanese then, there is an obvious truism: that their nation should be a major world power.

And they’re right.

But the problem is that the Japanese then, and the Iranians today, are both wrong in how they think they should achieve that power. They think that they must have a powerful, conquering military, that is able to bully and force everyone else to recognize what they should be. They think that national power comes from military aggression.

Japan did become a world power, as it is today. But it was not because of its powerful military, it was in spite of its military. And Iran is in the same boat.

Were Iran to just stop trying to conquer the world, and instead devote itself to economic development and the prosperity and improvement of its people, it would easily get what it really wants.

But instead, it thinks that by having nuclear weapons, that suddenly, overnight, they will get everything they want, as wishes granted by Aladdin’s djinn. Their economy will boom, other nations will have to pay them tribute and obey them as lords. Their religion will dominate the region, and everything will be positively grand.

On top of everything else, Iran is ruled by corrupt and greedy men, who lust after the easy answer to all their collective problems, and think of themselves as brilliant strategists, who cannot fail because they are under the aegis of heaven.

But were they to be removed and replaced, the problem would still remain, because it is the typical Iranian who needs to learn the lesson that prosperity comes from working to become prosperous, not from a magical lamp.

Some time ago, I thought it would be a good idea to broadcast a satellite channel to Iran on the horrors of nuclear war. 24 hours a day of nuclear terror drama, grotesque injury, medical documentaries, etc. Maybe it might have penetrated their thick skulls.

Exactly. I’ve been saying this for years. In Iran, ISLAM TRUMPS ALL! Despite reports of how ‘pro-western’ Iranians may be, you can be sure that if we, an infidel nation, attacks Iran, an Islamic nation, the same students who rally against the Iranian government will start lining up to be fitted for a suiicide vest. The remainder will join Hezbollah. There people are easily radicalized. What the ‘Iranian street’ thinks means exactly nothing once the first round is fired.

It has absolutely nothing to do with Islam, it has to do with nationalism.

Nationalism is part of it, but you’ll never convince me that it has nothing to do with Islam. Nearly everything in the Middle East, and especially in fundamentalist states like Iran, has something to do with Islam.
