Fred Thompson watch update With the McCain campaign circling the drain, there is speculation that Thompson's announcement, which earlier rumors said would happen on the 4th of July, may have been delayed to coincide with McCain's withdrawal.
In related news, Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Bob Davis stepped down last week, presumably to join the Thompson campaign.
The Thompson campaign is also said to be looking to hire some former McCain campaign workers who were laid off last week.
Bloomberg says that both Thompson and Giuliani could benefit from picking up some of McCain's financial backers.
And speaking of fundraising, Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post's "The Fix" blog takes a look at Fred Thompson's campaign finances and offers up some interesting theories on why Tennessee is such a reliable GOP fundraising state.

There are so many reasons why that’s not going to happen.

I’d plug my nose and vote for that ticket.
I’d much rather see Thompson-Steele
or
Thompson-Hunter

Only if Thompson doesn’t want to win. Any ticket with McCain is doomed.

My favorite tickets would be, in order:
Thompson/Hunter
Thompson/J.C.Watts
Thompson/Steele
Thompson/Romney
I pray it isn’t McCain or Rudy in the VP spot!
To: Red Badger
Thompson-McCain ‘08?.......No chance.
McCain wouldn't do it, if he got begged, and Thompson has no reason to do so, or inclination.

McCain will not drop out until the first primary, as he has a lot of pride/ego...BUT, if Thompson offers him the VP slot on the ticket, I think McCain will bail and Republicans will be blessed with a Thompson/McCain ticket for '08...
But hey, at least it's not Rudy McRomney, right?
This may prove a huge dilemma for conservatives...

Will someone please explain to me why the Thompson campaign would be interested in hiring all of these McCain losers? If he’s going to take on the dreaded Clinton Machine and Lame-Stream Media, he’s going to need proven winners, not proven losers !
To: Red Badger
Hiring former McCain employees is NOT the same as hiring McCain.
There is a greater likelihood that Fred will select me as a running mate than McCain. About the same as selecting Cindy Dirty Ankles.
